CowboyGal2011
It costs a lot of money, so much that most people have to go into debt to buy it. It has considerable intrinsic value, but it is also understood to be an investment. And it is a status symbol--indeed, almost a necessary condition for achieving middle-class status. Its acquisition by as wide a swath of the population is widely seen as a social good. Thus the government heavily subsidizes it through tax incentives and other means. That, however, creates an artificial demand that drives prices up and, in a vicious circle, spurs demands for more subsidies. Efforts to make it more easily acquired for minorities, who by objective standards tend to be less qualified, compound the problem. In the current economy, it has turned out to be considerably less valuable than promised. As a result, many Americans are under water, with debts that they will not be able to pay off easily. Can you guess what that is describing?

Riffraff
Housing, education, and health insurance are all correct. Though it only fits most of the criteria, Good Credit or even the golden bling could be underlying winners.

MrTed46
Leave her alone Ted... that's not polite. I'd take her out to the barn and make her hit accept on giving me McFadden for Jamaal Charles in a redraft league then I'd send her home riding a donkey wearing a Raiders jersey. Heck i'll even give the donkey a carrot.

CowboyGal2011
The amount of student loans taken out last year crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time and total loans outstanding will exceed $1 trillion for the first time this year. Americans now owe more on student loans than on credit cards, reports the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Students are borrowing twice what they did a decade ago after adjusting for inflation, the College Board reports. Total outstanding debt has doubled in the past five years — a sharp contrast to consumers reducing what's owed on home loans and credit cards. http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/colleg...debt/50818676/1 The education bubble. WaterMan
Hmm so tons of Americans are trying to better themselves and move up the class ladder but it isn't happening judging by the amount of outstanding loans.
