The Broken Arrow (OK) High School marching band competed in the Bands of America Grand National Marching Band Championships last week in the very cool Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy and walked away with the very prestigious National Championship. Second Grand National title for our band in the last six years and the first in my son's tenure. This is not just some marching band competition, but the Super Bowl. My youngest is a senior and plays the snare in the drumline.

Amazing, tense competition, with the top 92 bands in the nation, having previously qualified through regional and super regional competition. I was a sports guy so I have no real perspective here, but apparently this is a very big deal. The city of Broken Arrow threw them a huge reception when the buses returned on Sunday night, with full three alarm fire trucks and police cruiser escort through the city and an awesome display of confiscated fireworks. TV coverage and the whole bit.

It was fun. Glad I went, though it kept me out of a treestand for a few days.

As a former Band Geek, member of the 4 year undeafeated state championship Upper Dublin Marching Cardinals, I salute your son's championship!!

Not to mention being a drummer kicks butt! (Quad player here)

It's a lot of hard work and a lot of practice that gets you in that position! Congrats to your son! He will remember this for a long time!

He and the other 261 members of the BA band. Thanks for the kind words.

The girl across the street from us and the boy next door are both members of the Rockford, MI band that placed 22nd in the competition. I was talking with my next-door neighbors yesterday and I mentioned that I go to a message board where a person there is the father of a member of the Broken Arrow band. My neighbor's response was "they are good!"

Very gratifying to hear. This is the most interesting thing about marching band competitions compared to sporting events. All the parents sit together and go out of their way to meet parents from other programs. Lots of "your band is fantastic", "No, your band is fantastic". At sporting events it's usually "you got lucky you stupid piece of $%#@! You're kid's a fag and you're a menace........."
