I don't know why the stuff they make in Chicago is even called pizza. It's a totally different animal. They should call it something like Italian Pie or Baked Italian Skillet, or something like that.

And if I have to choose between eating it and NYC pizza. . .faggedaboudit. Gimme a slice from Famous Ray's every time. Slam dunk, no contest.

yep

(of course, NYC pizza isn't exactly what you get when you order pizza in Italy either though)

I ain't sayin the stuff ain't good. . I'm just saying it's like going to a cookout and asking for 2 hot dogs and getting 1 hamburger and 1 hot dog on your plate. They're not the same food, but they're called by the same name.

A slice with the hugh slab of sausage on it in the old Gino's in Chicago with my family on a vacation as a child is one of my fondest memories. My name was on a wall 25 years ago. I went back to Gino's a few years back in the new location and couldn't find it. :D

Never been to New York, but Compola's Tasty Pizza in Lyndhurst is my favorite local place. Am I the only Cleveland east-sider here?

And that is the point! TY, Wildcat!

For the last time :D ........as one of the few Chi Town people here, and if not the only , the oldest, and oldest = wisdom!

Chi town pizza is varied. Only tourists call Chi pizza pan pizza! We have/had neighborhood pizza. The pizza ran from thin to thick, bread (sicilian style) to whatever BUT PAN is a yuppie/tourist definition of Chi AREA pizza! :D Believe me, ALL of my Italian friends will agree..............PAN PIZZA IS NOT CHI PIZZA!!!!!!! That definition is too narrow and does not apply!

If you're a tourist or a yup....................call it what you will, but anyone can call a goat a horse....dammit it's still a goat!!!!!

Bottom line...................................Chi Pizza is more varied than NY style................but I'd like to hear from the 'yorkers on that.

CHI PIZZA IS NOT NECESSARILY PAN!!!! THAT'S JUST A STYLE OF CHI PIZZA!!!!!!

well..... pizza is indeed varied. in the same vein that neapolitan is different from venetian from milanese, etc. rr, i still condend that chicago does not claim rights to every type of pizza ranging from flat to deep dish/stuffed..... chicago can claim deep dish and stuffed as it's style.

as for my preference: really as the mood strikes..... i like different types of crust and different toppings.... all about if it tastes good

In the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for those not from the area) there are essentially two types of pizza. There's the classic Italian pizza and the less well known Greek pizza. Greek tends to be North of NYC while Italian is NYC and South. Both are excellent. Both beat the hell out of any of that stuff they're slinging in the mid-west. And do not call that crap from Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Caesar Caesar, Papa John's or any of the other national chains, pizza. It's some chewy stuff with ketchup and oil based cheese on it and it sucks. This includes anything with Uno in the name.

yup- for me it is Chicago pies by a landslide. Gino's is incredible

Bingo. I make it a point to hit Gino's any time I'm around Chicago - they make a stunningly good pie. NY pizza is good, but lacks the depth of flavor and texture a good Chicago pie offers.

I am now hungry. :D

i gotta be honest, i'll eat pizza made in alaska if it's good, i love pizza. but if i have to choose, i'm taking new york style, folding it in half, and shoving it down.

Never been to either place but I have never met a pizza I didn't like.

I pretty much agree with all quotes above. I had Gino's for the first time while at a wedding in Chicago this past summer and I must say it was very tasty.

Simply put, I'd rather have NY style pizza, but it's all good.

I've rarley had a bad pizza. Just some are better than others.
