Big John
It's half right, as a tie is a half win and a half loss.
Avernus
it depends on your situation..... if you need a win to make the playoffs and you get a tie.....then you essentially lose... if you need to not lose, but you get a tie....then you...... didn't lose? franchizetag
depends on what those chasing you do. If they lose you win if they win you lose. Simple

PolishNorbi
In soccer, a tie is closer to a loss. Most point systems consider: 3pts for win, 1pt for tie. Edited October 21, 2009 by PolishNorbi
Grits and Shins
In soccer, a tie is closer to a loss. Most point systems consider: 3pts for win, 1pt for tie. In American football a tie is exactly equal to half a win. And when you say 'most systems' ... the only two I am aware of are soccer and hockey ... everybody else I can think of considers a tie as a half win/half loss. They go to overtime and/or shootouts to break the tie now.

Yup ... forgot about that recent changes ... so I guess 'most systems' corresponds to just soccer.
myhousekey
And not in hockey anymore. They go to overtime and/or shootouts to break the tie now. But you still get a point for going to overtime and losing right? (Haven't been following hockey closely lately...)
Big John
But you still get a point for going to overtime and losing right? (Haven't been following hockey closely lately...) yes, and 2 points for any win.
Duchess Jack
as a fan - I'd feel like we lost if my team tied - regardless of the competition. IMHO anything south of a win is a loss.
Grimm74
Hijack! Balzac
odd question, as I'm not sure why the answer matters. That said, I say it's closer to a loss simply because you didn't accomplish what you set out to do (i.e., you failed to win).

Both major parties are guilty of this though they use different means to do so.
Grimm74
U r right it does not and I will not post again about it. You and I agree...and it seems you have read the book even if you haven't.
Czarina
I think it depends on whether you were behind and caught up to tie the game, or whether you blew the lead and ended up with the tie. Grimm...intemperate? Do you mean interpret?
