Starting Lineup Controversy

Recommended Posts

We have a 12 team pretty competitive league. Heres the controversy.

This is the final week of the regular season for us. There are about five or six teams fighting for the last couple of playoff spots.

One of the week 13 match ups is husband vs. wife. Yes, husband vs. wife. She is out of the playoffs with a 4-8 record. He is 7-5 and guarenteed a spot iin the playoffs with a win. She had the first draft pick this year and selected Chris Johnson. Played him every week.

Now in week 13 she has benched him (CJ), claims he cost her wins in the last two weeks. The guys in the mix for the last couple of spots think its BS and she should be forced to start him. The commish sent her a note saying a few people were upset that Johnson was benched, she replied she has a right to field what ever team she thinks is best.

She is starting.

RB, LT @NE

RB, Thomas Jones vs. DEN

Flex, Jacoby Ford @SD

Think i know what the feedback will be (cant prove colusion) but asking anyway...

Thoughts, comments, snide remarks  ???

All three of those RBs may score more than CJ.

As a CJ owner, I sympathize. I scoured my roster for someone I could put in who I thought would score more points than his punk ass, but in the end I couldn't pull the trigger. Someone else legitimately might have gone the other way.

In the future, probably not best to have husband-wife play each other on the last week of the season. Too much opportunity for shenanigans.

yea I would be upset if I were fighting for a playoff spot and seen CJ being benched. But you said shes out and her husbands guaranteed a spot already. So wheres the collusion? Regardless she shouldnt be acting like a punk and I would vote her stinky ass out!!

In order to allow a husband and wife to own different teams in the same league, they should know that they need to make sure (more so than anyone else) that there is no appearance of impropriety between them. This would hold true of trades between them as well. This move certainly seems to be fishy at least.

But the bottom line is that she is correct... she has the final say in her lineup, unless you are prepared to call her a cheater and boot her from the league. Not an easy thing to do, but she doesn't seem to give a flying flip about integrity here, so I'd lean towards running her ass out on a rail and taking over the management of that team for this last game.

I dunno. it certainly smells a little fishy, but it's not like CJ has been doing much of late.

No need to insult the dude's wife.

Tough call as there is definitely legitimate reasons to believe that all 3 of those players have a decent chance to outscore Chris Johnson given the teams current situation and his recent 5 yard performance, though I am not sure I could pull the trigger on benching him.

+1 for the laugh and the advice. This is at best marginal collusion, and would not be enough for me to get worked up about.

It's total collusion, even if subliminally triggered by marriage.

C'mon, it's totally bogus. I would quit that league.

She can't even fit CJ into the flex over Jacoby Ford?

The CJ-stinkathon from last week might make benching him seem defensible. I don't buy it, though.

If her other options are LT, TJones, and Jacoby Ford, a quick review of their performances the previous 2 weeks suggests that only TJones in week 11 would have given her more points (standard scoring). Yes, Ford outscored CJ in week 12, but there's no one in any league that would have made that substitution before the games were played. The argument that she's losing points by starting CJ doesn't really hold water.

Exactly. I've been doing this for 20 years. a wife benching CJ for all those flimsy names in the sphere of her husband's playoff run is total collusion.

The funny thing is, the Fantasy Gods have a way of spanking people for this. Watch the husband lose anyway.

Pretty much everything here is 100%.

Nothing you can do about this week, but I'd take a serious look at whether you want them BOTH back next year owning separate teams. They need to do almost everything possible to avoid the appearance of collusion. Instead, with everything on the line in terms of a playoff berth, they do the opposite, and bench the top-drafted RB in football (and with his QB Collins back behind center).

Not sure you can boot her this week, though. Imagine the egg on your face if you took over her line-up, Chris Johnson puts up another goose egg, and the guy you benched goes for 2 TDs.

If she wins her husband MAY not make the playoffs. Shes already out..

No, what I meant was, everyone is assuming benching CJ automatically means she's going to lose. What if she's telling the truth, and the move gives her the win? Or what if the commissioner overrides her lineup, and inserting CJ as a starter actually causes her to lose?

It's her lineup. If everyone feels strong enough about collusion, then kick both owners out.

Bet her $100 that CJ outscores Ford this week...see if she bites...hell even offer some odds to make it interesting...see what happens....I should add that depending on the payout for the playoff spot that $100 bones might be to much or not enough.

Wow!

Jacoby Ford is getting ALLOT of targets of late, especially of the deep variety and LT has a nice match up where he should get allot of receptions of not a chunk of yardage on the ground. Jones is playing in a game were there could be 10 touch downs could be score (combined) in this game and he is seeing allot of GL work with Denver being the 30th ranked D against the Run.

I'm an "outside the box" thinker so I make similar line up decisions on a regular basis as this persons move here( in which I'm in 3 playoffs this year and a potential 4th in my dynasty league - 2 of which I hold the highest point lead). I'm rarely of the mind that your stud must always start unless you have a player like Rivers, , Vick Foster or even Mendenhal. I think 98% of NFL players could be looked at by matchup rather than their historical prowess.

CJ is no longer a must start player. Nor is Megatron, unlike many who seem to think. These players, IMHO, are matchup type players. If there is a better matchup, you should bench them. You may pay the price for doing so but by the same token, you could pay the price for starting them as well.

Thinking there is collusion for starting viable players over other viable players is just ridiculous. I mean what the hell type league are people playing in that they need to control how people draft, trade and now set their own line up???

I was being antogistic with my above comment but this is pretty much spot on...but I don't think you can boot them this year...just don't have them back next year or don't return yourself

Ford has outscored all three of those other guys in the past 4 weeks. He's hit or miss, but he's capable of massive games. If anything, you bench Jones out of those four, but he's got a very lucrative matchup against a very weak DEN run D, and KC looks to be playing from ahead for a good portion of the game.

Benching CJ is a very reasonable action given what a mess TEN is right now - but it takes guts for exactly the reasons most seem to want to be insulting to the wife here. And it's always a bad mistake make FF judgments based upon name recognition alone.

What happens if she's correct and CJ is the low scorer of the bunch after the weekend is over - and others in the league forced her to make the change? It is a real possibility. What do you say to the league taking control of her team then?

Unless the situation is egregious - and here it clearly is not - let owners manage their own damned teams.

Aside from all the nonsense. This is a boys club and a boys hobby. Girls find something else to do really. Not trying to be gender sexist but just leave the football alone. Its our get away from you and its almost all we have left. thankyou.

the dude's on the precipice of not making the playoffs. If he needs his wife to cheat to get in, he won't last long in the playoffs. karma

Yes, never in my years in fantasy have I seen someone choose a flavor-of-the-week over a struggling stud... Oh wait, I've seen that nearly every week of this crazy season in particular :cough: Randy Moss :cough:, and JUM just had an article about it.... Not the way I usually roll, especially with CJ2K and Collins coming back for a matchup in JAX, but I understand the feeling of being "snake-bit" by a guy.

If the wife and husband are really colluding, then lucky for them to do it in a week after a rough outing when people are legitimately questioning CJ's performance, right or wrong... Could just as easily be fishy as it could be the wife chasing past performance, like even savvy players sometimes do...

Though I agree that it would probably be smart to change the schedule so that the husband and wife aren't playing eachother in a likely-elimination week, but anything outside of that seems a bit excessive, unless they have a pattern of shady history in the league...

What is her roster? Are there others she could have started over those? Is there a weekly prize?
