Vacation Alternatives

I loved Destin. Really makes me sick to think of all the damage the spill continues to cause.

Hilton Head is nice. Has sort of a residential feel in a lot of areas, as opposed to being overly commercialized. Great restaurants, nice wide beaches that don't get crowded. If you golf, it's a no-brainer.

What does your family like to do on vacation?

bingo. activities? food? culture? entertainment?

if i were on the east coast, i'd prob look into the keys or Caribbean (based on what we like to do).

Our family goes to Destin every year on vacation. We were supposed to go the end of July/first of August this year. Can you all give me some alternative spots, probably on the east coast?

Thanks

Assuming you want some beach and sun, since Destin was the original plan, so:

Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, outer banks in the Carolinas would all be a terrific one-year fix, though all would be pricey during that time farme: high season for the East Coast beach goers. All great spots, though, for the family getaway. Big difference is that in Destin, you were likely in a hotel? In these spots and towns up the coast, you are better off renting a home or timeshare...you get a lot more space for the money.

Good luck...and if you need help with a hotel somewhere (if thats the way you opt to go)....lemme know, I might be able to help.

St. Simons Island, GA. Should get good hotel rates, pretty good beach, neat little 'downtown"/strip area. Good bars, decent restaurants, great golf. Jekyll Island is a 15 mintue drive from St. Simons. A gambling cruise, the ocean princess, goes out of port there. If you wanted to head to Savannah for the day, it is 1 hour and 15 north. I don't recommend Savannah/Tybee, because the beaches suck. Also, in St. Simons, if you wanted to do a day trip to Jacksonville, it is only 45 minutes.

Ocean Inn and Suites is a pretty good hotel w. a great location and should go for 99 to 149 a night. King and Prince is probably the nicest but a bit more pricey. Check out the hotels on expedia, if you have questions, ask me.

ETA: Ocean Inn is not on beach, two blocks off the beach. King and Prince, other than the Cloister on sea Island, is the only one on the beach.

The only issue I have with any of these locations is that Myrtle and the outer banks are very difficult to get to (depending on where you fly into and what you're willing to spend on airfare,) Hilton head is great place, not a huge fan of the beaches, Myrtle has the best beaches, but easy to get to if you fly into Savannah. There is also Charleston as an option.

From where are you coming?

 Arkansas

I'd look at flying into JAX or Savannah, probably least expensive place to get to any of the GA or SC locations. Believe it or not, Driving from Savannah to Myrtle is about as Quick as flyin from CHarlotte or Columbia, SC to Myrtle. Jax is closer to St. Simons and Savannah closest to Hilton Head.

Flying into St. Simons/Brunswick is $$, I would think.

Try Surfside Beach or Garden City Beach they are right south of Myrtle Beach but the beaches are not as crowed and provide more of a family atmosphere. You still have easy access to all the attractions at myrtle Beach.

very good suggestions here...my friend did not cancel his July 4th Destin trip after much debate. He will be renting a boat and geting out there. I will let you know what he says it is like down there, he is leaving on Monday and will inform me of the beaches, etc. I just love Destin for family getaway and it sux that you have to change your plans.

Myrtle is overrated and pretty trashy IMO. Most people who live down here avoid it, unless you want to see a bunch of redneck chicks with muffin tops.

Hilton Head is great for adults, but kids can get a bit bored there. You'll see a lot of older vacationers there, but it is beautiful and great if you like tennis and golf.

Savannah and Charleston are two of the coolest places you can ever visit. Not traditional beach destinations, but the history is unreal. Your wife will love both places.

Oak Island ( just south of Wilmington ) is a great place to rent a beach house. Pretty local feel and no commercial vibe at all.

Why would you leave paradise to go on vacation?

Haha. It's tough, but sometimes you have to see how the other half lives.

I've got some friends who are in Destin right now. WIll try to find out what the conditions are like, but from what I understand it's fine there right now.

Thanks, rajn. If anyone heads that way in the next few weeks, I'd love to get a report.

Fort Walton, which is a few miles up the beach from Destin, is getting oil globs on the beaches. My wife's best friend lives there, and has posted pics she took on her FB account. The beaches aren't officially closed, but they have been told to swim at their own risk.

me thinks you would be smart to make alternate plans, if only just for one year. You can always return in the future once the all-clear is given, and it gives you a chance to try something new. With hotel rates still at or near rock bottom, you should be able to get a lot of bang-for-the-buck with wherever you decide to go.

Destin news reporting the oil from a week or two ago

Article from Today, still reporting tar balls washing ashore

The good news is that, if you do indeed end up going to Destin, you should be able to name your price. Sounds like a ghost town, from the prior article, and I am sure many condo owners are in dire straights, and are looking for anything to make their mortgage payment.

I went back and read that article, and this time looked at the pictures in the margin. I can't beleive there are people swimming AMONGST the oil booms. Kids no less. Picture of one kid getting ready to jump the containment equipment to get to the surf

Kinda reminded me of that scene from Jaws when the Mayor is on the beach urging people to get in the water.
