Home of the Orignal Cabela's and their corporate offices. Lincoln, NE - 1998-2002, college town, not much more than a great place for football. traffic is god awful, weather decent. Miami, FL - 2004 - 2005, weather great except for the hurricanes and the total lack of seasons. big, dirty, crime infested, crowded, exorbitantly high cost of living and the people were jackazzes in general, happy to leave. Omaha, NE - 2002 - 2004 & 2005 - present, great place all around. People are fantastic, tons of jobs, low cost of living, great night life. The Scene: No dance clubs, a couple of bars, lots of strip malls. Boring. Rent/Mortgage: Paid plenty for a 3 bedroom modified two-story. Woods in the backyard for privacy... very nice neighborhood! St. Paul, MN Description: The better of the Twin Cities. One of the classiest mid-sized cities out there. The Scene: Lot's of dive hole-in-the-wall bars. Grand Avenue is the place to be. Great restaurants. Tons of cultural events. Rent/Mortgage: Paid about $800/mo for a 1 bedroom apt. + garage space (which some punk burned down with my car still inside). Rome, IT Description: Everywhere you turn you come face-to-face with history! Lived about three blocks from the Forum... dirty but amazing! The Scene: Surprisingly enough, there is an Irish pub on every other corner. Some very European dance clubs open late at night. Restaurants that would make you weep (in a good way). Rent/Mortgage: Catholic Church paid for my stay as I studied for the Priesthood. Seattle, WA Description: Some element of natural beauty surrounds the city. Always something to do... lots of young people! Safeco Field should be a model for every stadium in the nation. The Scene: Get out your rainbow, it's not just raining... it's raining men! No seriously, there's a lot of the gays there. NTTAWWT. Rent Mortgage: Lived for peanuts (about $150/month) at a Catholic Church Rectory while I was a Chaplain at the VA Hospital down the street. I went through the Seminary process and I am an ordained Deacon, but then I changed directions just a couple of months before my Priestly ordination. Population of 5000. I lived there 3 years. It was located in the black hills which is a beautiful area. Everything else sucks. Typical small town. Biloxi, MS-I was in tech school for 10 months down there. Was only an hour and a half from New Orleans and went there about 2 weekends a month. Great time, blurry memories. They come to my poker games, drink beer, and smoke cigars with us. Couple of 'em are into Fantasy Football but weekends get busy as you can imagine. Rapid City, South Dakota: Has big dinosaurs up on a hill. Mt. Rushmore nearby. When I lived there there was a hole in a Mt. where they were building the Crazy Horse monument. Fun but dirty town / with a little dirty fun thrown in. London, England: Spent a couple summers there. Fun & expensive town. Back to Seattle area. Most recently in North Bend, WA: Home of Twin Peaks. Now, in Portland, OR most week days (back in North Bend most weekends). Fun town. Great beer. Plenty to do outdoors. Lots of homeless people. Mountains, ocean nearby, 3 national parks, good weather(the clouds and rain never bothered me), summers are almost naturally air conditioned outdoors. Very majestic area. Base of the Cascades, very similar to the front range for you Colorado folks. Great scenery and surrounding area, but a lot poor migrant workers and white trash. So right wing whacky that Perch and Balla would be considered mainstream. Cultural armpit. 2 Bedroom apt. $400. Chelan, WA Another pretty area. A town based at the end of a 50 mile long high mountain lake with water as blue and clear as can be. Super spendy, tourist trap town, frat boy and hot girl hang out in the summer. Freaky political small town stuff otherwise. Worked for the forest service and rented a big house with a bunch of other firefighters. Bellingham, WA Maybe the most scenic area in the United States. 70 miles North of Seattle and about 40 south of Vancouver BC. Decent cost of living, home of Western Washington University, awesome area. 2 bedroom house rented for around $500. Soon to move back. Laramie, Wyoming, well not really but the mountains about 45 miles away. Town is ugly, Home of University of Wyoming. Nice community, housing is way too expensive for buying/living in Wyoming (2nd most expensive to Jackson Hole). Decent enough town due to college, but by the time the weather warms up at 7000+ feet the college girls leave and the population goes down from 35K to about 10K. We often become the most populated city in Wyoming (instead of Cheyenne or Casper) when the Cowboys have a football game. And a lot of friends did interships at radio Woodstock, very nearby.
