rocknrobn26
I even passed it by my resident nutritionist (Mrs. RR) and she agreed w/ most of it. I'll put a link in the food forum, so don't give me any crap about "WRONG FORUM!". GOOD TO KNOW! Pass the butter ~ ~ ~ ~ This is interesting. Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings. DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years And now, for Margarine.. Very high in trans fatty acids. Triple risk of coronary heart disease. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.. This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Puddy
I vote Margarine... I mean Butter is as way too old to even think about taking on the likes of Margarine. Sure Butter has the experience but with all that dairy, his arteries are probably too clogged to withstand the duration of the fight without keeling over. Margarine is really smooth. He has taken the taste of toast to heights Butter could only dream of. Not as close a battle as you might think. Hey where's the poll option. Jimmy Neutron
Nothing but butter for me. My wife gets annoyed when I catch her trying to slip me margarine. I can taste that crap in anything. She can't figure out why the kids like my scrambled eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches more than hers. She tries to use margarine or that uber-crap cooking spray. Skippy
We have been using margarine for years. I went to see a cardiologist some time ago and one of the very first things that he told me was to switch to butter. I was shocked. I then went on to read a lot of stuff like this and also read the Atkins book. Dr. Atkins was very adamant that margarine was a killer. Since that time I have switched to butter but can’t get the wife to switch. She claims that she doesn’t like the taste of butter.

Czarina
You can buy margarines that don't have trans fat now. Trans fat is the new evil. It's in LOTS of things and is now generally considered to be a major risk. They started putting trans fats into margarine to solidify it. The closer to liquid your fats are the less trans fatty they are. So soft margarine > stick margarine. Butter is naturally more solid. Butter is more natural. Chemical manipulation of food is something to avoid imo. Much of our food will sit around for years without spoiling. That can't be a good thing. But isn't hating butter un-american?
cliaz
good stuff here. I love butter. But I hardly use butter or margarine unless a something calls for it. Kid Cid
I never, ever, ever use margarine. I'm a firm believer that the mor echemical manipulation food goes through befor eI eat it, the worse off it is for you. Given two alternatives, I'll always opt for the more natural. wiegie
Salted for buttering bread/toast. 1275002[/snapback] I disagree. Unsalted butter tastes delicious on bread and toast. Unsalted butter tastes delicious everywhere. (And if you need salt, you can add it with a shaker).
