Veteran's Day

I'm sure Big John already has a sortable list in his databank but this weekend got me to wondering how many folks in The Huddle are active duty or have served.

With our huddled masses seemingly increasing exponentially, I'm sure there are quite a few.

Yep.

General Pershing should have been put in stocks for his role at the end of WWI. We lost more men in the final hours of WWI than we did on D-Day.

Can you imagine being in the trenches of WWI knowing that the ceasefire is at 11am and your commander sends you and your mates over the wall and in to withering German machine gun fire hours before the ceasefire? Absolutely criminal....

:stepsoffsoapbox: I don't mean to hijack the thread, but many people are not aware of this travesty that occurred when Allied victory was already secure.

:D

I would like to say THANK YOU. I always make it a point whenever I see a uniformed serviceman to walk up and say thank you and shake their hand. It is something my grandfather started me doing along time ago and I find that the gesture is greatly appreciated. I have great respect for the men and women of our military past and present. :D:wacko::D

Yeah, I was on a flight between San Diego and Phoenix this week and a couple of Marines came onboard. There were two open spots and they were gonna put some employees in them...I suggested bringing those two Marines up...and they did! :D

Because I served in the Marines I'll provide some pretty touching and outstanding quotes about the U.S. Marine Corps:

The man who will go where his colors will go, without asking, who will fight a phantom foe in a jungle and mountain range, without counting, and who will suffer and die in the midst of incredible hardship, without complaint, is still what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to Democratic America. He is the stuff of which legions are made. His pride is his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thorough and coldly realistic, to fit him for what he must face, and his obedience is to his orders. As a legionary, he held the gates of civilization for the classical world...he has been called United States Marine.

--Lieutenant Colonel T.R. Fehrenbach, US Army in "This Kind of War"

Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their Commandant almost as if he was a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOB's I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and , generally speaking, of the United States Marines I've come in contact with, are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet.

--An Anonymous Canadian Citizen

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

--John Stuart Mill

Some interesting "where'd that come from" quotes:

"First to Fight"

Marines have been in the forefront of every American war since the founding of the Corps. They have carried out over 300 landings on foreign shores. They have served everywhere, from the poles to the tropics. Their record of readiness reflects pride, responsibility and challenge.

"Leathernecks"

The Marines' long-standing nickname goes back to the leather stock or neckpiece, which was part of the Marine uniform from 1775 to 1875. The leather bands around their threats were intended to ensure that Marines kept their heads erect.

"Devil Dogs"

In the Belleau Wood fighting in 1918, the Germans received a thorough indoctrination in the fighting ability of the Marines. Fighting through supposedly impenetrable woods and capturing supposedly untakeable terrain, the persistent attacks, delivered with unbelievable courage soon had the Germans calling Marines "teufelhunden," referring to the fierce fighting dogs of legendary origin.

"Esprit de Corps"

The "spirit" of a unit. This spirit is commonly reflected by all members. It implies devotion and loyalty to the Marine Corps, with deep regard for history, traditions and honor.

"Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue"

Refers to the victories in World War II, especially at Iwo Jima, the largest all-Marine battle in history. Admiral Nimitz's ringing epitome of Marine fighting on Iwo Jima was applied to the entire Marine Corps in World War II.

"Jarhead"

A slang term used by sailors as early as World War II to refer to members of the Marine Corps, drawing the term from the resemblance of the Marine dress blues uniform, with its high collar, to a Mason jar.

"Semper Fidelis"

The Motto of the United States Marine Corps. Latin for always faithful. Faithful to God, Country, Family and the Corps.

"Once a Marine, Always a Marine"

The motto of the Marine Corps League. Having earned the title of Marine it becomes a integral part of who and what we will become later in life.

THanks Everybody.

My first time checking in since I got here and this was at the top. Hope every one is doing better than the three teams I have left to wallow in the mire of my deployment.

I think I'll post something else before I get off of here this morning, but first it's off to FnB to see what I've been missing.

Take Care All

Viet era vet here, USAF, but did not serve in country.... did fly over that stinkin place though.... on a transport. That was enough for me. One complaint.... is that I think any vet, working for ANY company should get the day off. It's our day... to remember those we served with, and to think about the 4 (or more ) years we did serve. Memorial day is when I tend to think about firends and family I've lost from wars, but vets day, that;s for those who lived.
