Sure, they were expressing their "freedom of speech" as was Rick Monday. Rick didn't do anything to them, simply took their prop away from them. Actually, the perpetrators broke several laws to exercise their "freedom of speech" whereas Rick Monday did not.

agreed.

So, what you're saying is, that many Americans died preserving our freedom of speech. However, should some Americans exercise that freedom, and be in direct opposition to your views, you feel justified kicking their ass?

I let all my 7th graders know they do have the freedom to express themselves and so far flag burning is still protected. But if I EVER see someone trying to put a match to MY flag they will also be a recipient of my expression of speech which would be my foot going up a delicate part of their anatomy. God Bless RM!

:D

I'd be right beside you! Too many people have died/suffered defending that "Piece of Cloth". One of our 'GREAT' statesmen have to declare the flag sacred. YEAH, I'm a BHL, but our flag is sacred to too many to pass it off as just a "Piece of Cloth!

Dam, I stand up, hand over heart when it's played even when I'm by myself! RESPECT! If we've lost anything lately it is that...RESPECT!

I think the obvious answer is YES!!!! :D

I guess we'll have to differ on our interpretations of "freedom of speech" then.

Freedom of speech I can agree w/.....This incident was not that!

agreed.

Cool!

I am passionate about our country. I believe in freedom of speech, but I don't agree w/ 'Freedom to desecrate a time honored symbol', that so many had to cling to, to keep their sanity and survive.

Rant over!

The constitution says that the government won't abridge free speech.

It doesn't say anything about preventing richly deserved ass-kickings.

Who has a problem with that?

I wish that Monday would have bowled them over, but what he did was still great!

Those clowns were just that! CLOWNS...................that should have been been beatin' severely!

I've posted this before. Many brave and honorable men and women have fought died in order to insure the right for all Americans to have the freedom of speech. This included nazi hate speech, the KKK, black panthers, and yes, burning the flag. Just because I strongly disagree with the aforementioned types of expression, does not mean I have the right to stop it or cause physical pain to others who espouse it. That is the crux of freedom of speech. It gives us all, each of us, the ability to express ourselves, no matter how strongly others disagree. It is one of the rights that make this country great.

There are countries where an individual is not allowed to burn the flag...North Korea, China, Iran - to name a few. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't want to live in those countries.

It may be in every Americans right to burn the flag as an expression of their freedom of speech. I'm not sure...

At the same time, I do believe it's in my rights to kick anyones ass who tries to do so.

:D

One act gets many to call you an ass hole.

The other gets you arrested for battery.

Unta the two go together ...those fighting for freedom of speech and the many brave warriors who died , also fought for the flag first and foremost

The two go together ...the flag symbolizes freedom ....because the flag represents our country and the brave men and women who died for it and the very symbpl of freedom itself makes it imperative that it gets protected

Constitution , govt , bill of rights and all that jazz does not cover all things , all acts and actions

Example , holding a door open for someone else is the right thing to do ...Not holding a door open for someone however, although rude ,is not a crime

Burning a flag may not be a crime but its the wrong thing to do ...we have to defend what's right because its right and not just defend what is legal

Get it ?

Man I am smart

Are you at happy hour as you type this?

I agree that it's wrong to burn a flag and not something I would ever do. I also believe that when people protest by burning a flag, most people tune them out and therefore, this is not a successful tactic. However, I believe that burning the flag is part of freedom of speech. I think when the government begins to encroach on this right, it's a bad tihing.

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free".

no happy hour ...just a long day

however why do you beleive that burning a flag is part of a freedome of speech ? because the law says so or allows it

this goes back what i was trying to say ...some things are not ok even if the law allows it ...certainly not burning a flag

Freedom of speech was earned by that flag ...dont you see the irony of allowing the burning it in the name of freedom ?\

No way ...
