A Very Proud Day in American History

I am so proud today to be witness to one of the most historic days in American History. Today's election brought tears to my eyes for numourous resaons. To watch my father who is about as tough a man as I have known in my lifetime, tear up over Obama's victory was a special moment. He kept repeating what his father told him since he was a young child growing up in NC, "son you will never see a black president in your life time, NEVER". It was not black America, or Mexican America or any other minority that put Obama in office. It was white America. That's right. I never thought I would say this but white America proved in one evening that it has moved on to another chapter in American History. As a black man I am proud. Proud because the American people for the first time in history had the courage to dismiss tradition, set aside bias and evaluate a man on his true merits and character. We have elected a black man to be the most powerful man in the world. Let that sink in for a moment. I always new there was quality in every race. Men and woman that had power and leadership that transends race or color of skin. I just didn't know when America would come to grips with that reality. Barack Obama is one of the most dynamic men of our time and has the strength, resolve and temperment to be one of the greatest Presidents the country has ever seen. I can't wait for him to get started helping this country come together and better itself.

Racism will be with us for a long time but today is one day that all of us must agree that America has taken a giant step forward. Not because the President is Black. But because Americans voted for a black man to be President because they thought he was the best MAN for the job. Now how rare is that. In being a bit transparent, I really didn't believe it myself that it was possible because of what I had been told most of my life. Which is why I am so appreciative of what happened today. I needed to believe that America had changed for the better. That people in Iowa and Maine and Montana and Indiana and New Mexico and rural America have changed to look at individuals as just that, individuals.

This day validates the sacrafice of so many. That is what was behind the tears. Men like abolishonist John Brown and his freedom party. Fredrick Douglas, Rosa Parks, MLK, MX, Muhammad Ali, and the list goes on and on, from all those who died during slavery and the civil rights movement, down to the neighbor who came by to check on your family when the your dad was ill. Or the guy who had your back in school when the odds were against you. Or the guy who let you slid on a few bucks when you came up short at the counter. This election validates all of you who made a difference one person at a time. I always said that racism only survives if you never get to know someone from another race and the only thing you have to go by is what you read or what someone has told you about someone else. Myself, I have always tried to leave a good impression on those I meet so that they walk away with at least one good reference of a black guy they met once. That is sometimes all it takes. One good reference. It must be working because we have the first black President of the United States. And he was elected because white people and black people and brown people, in mass majority believed that he was the best man to lead them to better times. Now that is saying something and I am proud to be witness to a very inspiring and hopeful event. No matter whom you voted for, the fact that you had a choice to make over two qualified Men that had equal chance to appeal for your vote is what was significant here. Because for the first time in the history of this country, a black man was on equal footing for the most powerful position in the World and won on a level playing field. That is very significant.

So thank you America for proving that the American dream is indeed possible for ALL Americans. For until today there had never been a minority in the oval office that anyone in the world could look at and say, see, if he can do it, you can to. Which is what white America has been able to tell their children for 200 years now. That is some change and I am so proud to be a part of it. I am so happy tonight and that it scares me, because each time one of our powerful black leaders gets ahead something bad happens. I think Barack Obama is a very good man and I always said that America can't stand too much good. I sincerely hope we have come as far as I want to believe we have.

Congrats to President Elect Obama and all that got him there.

You're welcome.

-White America

Seriously, I do want to thank all Americans for validating what we have known all along, and that is we are an asset to any society. Tonight went a long way in proving on one of the grandest scales that many more Americans then first thought believe in the true American dream for every citizen that many fought and died for.

So Thank you indeed for growing past the past.

Corporate America put him in the office.

True, and the fact that corporate America was willing to spend millions and trust Obama AND believed he was viable to the American public is a very positive statement in it's self. Don't you think that is a very significant step that was just taken. Historically corporate America only spent money on minority athletes but to invest in a minority in order to help themselves prosper in respect to policy change and political control is yet another powerful shift in behavior wouldn't you say. That level of trust has been a long time coming.

Well said Cowbooyz1..

I'm old enough to remember Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron getting death threats and having to stay in separate hotels. America was much like Apatheid South Africa not that long ago.

Obama is probably more white than black(he was raised by his white mother and grandparents) but I still didn't think a colored person would be president here. This country has only had 1 catholic president and never a Jewish president.

This is a generational change and should benefit us around the world. If we want to generate democracy this will do far more in that regard that launching wars in the middle east.

I just hope Barack can draw the country together enough to solve the vast problems he has been left with...

We can do great things when we do them together.

This is a chapter in American history that we are all lucky enough to have lived through. Older Americans have seen things really change while middle aged Americans have seen change that they were not sure would ever happen and younger Americans knew it was possible all along.

I think that America is a better place, even if it is only in our minds, now that we have crossed this bridge.

Thank Cowboyz1 for your heartfelt and well thought out expression of your joy and hopefullness. Even though I voted for the other candidate I too am hopeful with our country having crossed this historical hurdle. Here's to hoping Mr. Obama's campaign rhetoric wasn't all political hotair but that there will be a pulling together of this great country's people and resources to a brighter future. My grandchildren are depending on it.

As a person who voted for McCain because of the issues, I can honestly put all that aside because it is an amazing day to see the first African-American President. I almost voted for him just for that reason but instead I stuck to my beliefs even though it was obvious McCain would lose. I think Obama will actually bring the American people together much more than McCain and right now that is probably more important than any issues.

Hopefully one day an African American person willl be elected president and nobody will mention his racial status and they will see him/her as the person that they are and not the color of their skin.

Who is "we"????? I hope you aren't using "we" to describe your race. This "we/they" thinking needs to stop...now!

Congrats to President Obama, OUR leader! And to Senator McCain, a true American hero.

I respect Mccain for his service to our Country. IMO Mccain suffered for Bush's sins. Bush brought down the party. I voted for Obama. What I would truly hate to see if black people gloating as if white people didnt have a choice in the matter. I think that would add tremendous strain to race relations. Obama needed the White vote to become president and he is as Swammi said "Our president" . This is in no way directed at Cowboyz. Just in general.

The other factor is that God forbid someone took a shot at Obama people have said it would lead to race riots in the US. That would be a shame . If a radical racist white person took a shot at Obama it should never indict all white people because obviously white people played a major part of him getting elected. It is a proud day for sure in this country. WE have a new president that can hopefully rally us in these tough times.

It was touching seeing the reaction of african-americans to Obama's victory. This is a historic day, and I think it will go along way to close what I feel is an imaginary race gap. Having said that I wish the first african-american we elected was not a socialist.

Funny, my (white) grandmother told me essentially said the same thing back when Jesse Jackson ran.

It's like Christmas morning. I don't know if I'm happier that W. & crew is gone or that we now have such a transcendent thinker as our new president elect. I just hope he keeps it up and has the ability to follow through. The thing is, he doesn't owe the old boy network anything. He doesnt have any ties to the "Big Energy", "Big Contractor", "Economic Hit Men" that have so destroyed our global standing, hold developing and underprivileged countries economically hostage and fomented terrorism despite anything we could do militarily. For the first time since Carter we might actually be able to increase our good will globally. He is the first president that has the chance to make good on his stump promises. I am going to, personally, hold him responsible and accountable. This is an Historic Moment and it has little to do with the color of our new President's skin.

Cowboyz1, I'm quite happy that you and I and everyone else here are alive during this momentous occasion. America has spoken and the results are that the majority of the people well and truly can look past the color of a man's skin. The fact that race wasn't an issue during this election is perhaps the most telling comment about this election. It is an amazing time to be an American.
