So gross. Now that the heat has reached central Texas, these suckers are everywhere. Even in plain daylight - which is somewhat rare I think. I was out on a delivery a few weeks ago and this guy was out watering his lawn, all of a sudden I see him drastically change the direction of where he was spraying, and all of a sudden this big ass possum runs out into the street in front of me.... I braked a bit (I wasn't going but 15-20 mph) and saw it stop on the other side of the street, look at me and make that hissing face. :Sideshow Bob uuuuuhhh:

From what I've heard from vets and random strangers in the street is that these types of behaviors in possums (and other normally nocturnal woodland creatures) could be a sign of rabies. Just be careful.

Possums (strictly Virginia opossums) are unlikely to carry rabies since their metabolism is not conducive to the disease.

Though many humans mistakenly consider opossums to be rats, opossums in fact are not closely related to rodents at all, rarely transmit diseases to humans, and are surprisingly resistant to rabies, due mainly to their lower body temperatures when compared to most placental mammals.
