US didn't offer big enough bribes. The venue is decided entirely on how much money will flow into FIFA pockets, both the organization and the members. FIFA under Sepp Blatter and before him Joao Havelange is the most corrupt sports body since Samaranch left the Olympics Committee.

And Rugby

Plus I'm glad we didn't get it. You think we have a problem with foreigners now imagine what it would be like with soccer hooligans running around here.

We hosted the World Cup in 1994 (I was lucky enough to attend three games in California).

And? It was fun? I know your posts are usually < 2 sentences but what was it like? No Waterman answers.

It was an amazing experience. I've gone to soccer games and listened to ignorant attendees yelling things like "kick the ball!" That would be like going to a baseball game and yelling at the pitcher, "Throw the ball real fast!" It was enjoyable listening to knowledgeable fans discussing the strategy of the game and be really excited to watch soccer. Additionally, it was top quality soccer. I was fortunate enough to see the United States play Brazil in the second round. The artistry of that Brazilian team was awe inspiring.

I interacted with fans from Russia, Columbia, and Brazil and it was a blast. In some ways, it was like a college football game atmosphere. There was a sense of national pride as well.

In 1991, I went to England and while there, I got tickets for an Arsenal vs Tottenham match at Wembley Stadium. Amazing.

Including this sentence, I've typed 13 sentences.

Qatar, with a population of 841,000, has not only never hosted a World Cup but not even played in one. FIFA inspectors who toured the country, which is half the size of Israel and slightly smaller than Connecticut, cautioned that the intense heat in summer, when the tournament will be played, posed a potential health risk for players and fans.

Qatar allayed the fears of some—but not all—FIFA voters by promising that stadiums, training venues and areas for fans to party will be cooled with solar-powered air conditioning. But it has yet to be proven that the technology will work on such a broad scale, which prompted the American on FIFA’s committee, Chuck Blazer, to quip: “I don’t see how you can air-condition an entire country.”

I wonder what the cops in Qatar are going to do with all half nekkid wimins that dance around in the stadium. The might have to turn one or two of the hotels into jails to hold all of the "infidels". Sharia law is going to be great for the sport!
