rajncajn
2 hours ago, purplemonster said: The difference is that Breeland was beat on the play and behind Evans. Evans isn't zigging and zagging he's running down the field pretty straight and Breeland essentially trips him, or at least isn't paying attention enough to not run into the back of Evans. It is his fault. In almost every sport you will almost always get called if you are behind someone and you trip him. Hockey, basketball, they aren't going to say 'incidental contact' even if you didn't mean to. I can see how someone would make that case but I think it is wrong because it unfairly disadvantages the player who got open. Breeland wasn't overtaking Evans, he was beat and trying to get back in the play. I too agree with Shaft. Anyway it would be interesting how many others consider that a penalty or incidental. Anyone? He didn't run into the back of Evans. Evans foot hit him in the leg causing him to fall. He barely even touched Evans as he went down. Being beat & his position had nothing to do with it. It was textbook incidental contact per the NFL rulebook: Quote ARTICLE 1. DEFINITION. It is pass interference by either team when any act by a player more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders an eligible player’s opportunity to catch the ball. Pass interference can only occur when a forward pass is thrown from behind the line of scrimmage, regardless of whether the pass is legal or illegal, or whether it crosses the line. Defensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is thrown until the ball is touched. See Article 2 for prohibited acts while the ball is in the air. Offensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is snapped until the ball is touched. See Article 2 for prohibited acts while the ball is in the air and Article 4 for prohibited acts prior to the pass. Breeland barely touched him. It was Evans' foot hitting Breeland that caused him to stumble and lose momentum. Quote ARTICLE 2. PROHIBITED ACTS BY BOTH TEAMS WHILE THE BALL IS IN THE AIR. Acts that are pass interference include, but are not limited to: (a) Contact by a player who is not playing the ball that restricts the opponent’s opportunity to make the catch; (b) Playing through the back of an opponent in an attempt to make a play on the ball; (c) Grabbing an opponent’s arm(s) in such a manner that restricts his opportunity to catch a pass; (d) Extending an arm across the body of an opponent, thus restricting his ability to catch a pass, and regardless of whether the player committing such act is playing the ball; (e) Cutting off the path of an opponent by making contact with him, without playing the ball; (f) Hooking an opponent in an attempt to get to the ball in such a manner that it causes the opponent’s body to turn prior to the ball arriving; (g) Initiating contact with an opponent by shoving or pushing off, thus creating separation. Note: If there is any question whether player contact is incidental, the ruling should be no interference. a. Contact was made that restricted Evans from getting to the ball & Breeland was not playing the ball. However, the added note specifically states that if there is even a question of incidental contact then the ruling should be no pass interference. b. Breeland was unable to play through the back of Evans c. He did not grab Evans & clearly made no attempt to tackle him to prevent him from getting to the ball d. Nope e. Nope f. Nope g. Breeland did not initiate the contact Quote ARTICLE 3. PERMISSIBLE ACTS BY BOTH TEAMS WHILE THE BALL IS IN THE AIR. Acts that are permissible by a player include, but are not limited to: (a) Incidental contact by an opponent’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball, or neither player is looking for the ball. If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference. (b) Inadvertent tangling of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball. (c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players, except as specified in 8-3-2 and 8-5-4 pertaining to blocking downfield by the offense. (d) Laying a hand on an opponent that does not restrict him in an attempt to make a play on the ball. (e) Contact by a player who has gained position on an opponent in an attempt to catch the ball. Seems pretty clearly to be textbook incidental contact.

Gopher
Side note.... This guy truly is one of the best. I’ve been listening to him since he did T-Wolves games back in the 90’s. Between the NBA, NCAA tourney, and NFL, he’s had an absolutely stellar career, making the most unexciting games exciting, and the exciting games feel out of this world. Whatever HOF there is for sports broadcasting, he’s deserving of a spot some day. I give you credit for a well laid out argument. You are clearly underpaid at your job and should be arguing cases at the Supreme Court. I agree with you it was incidental on Breeland's part. I think he created the situation though by running directly behind Evans. If this is always the case a defender could just run behind the player he was beaten by and wait until their feet got tangled and then claim innocence, that he didn't mean to trip anyone. If you are running in the kick zone of the guy in front you can't be surprised when your feet get tangled. Anyway, we have beaten this one to death, I see your argument from the rulebook but I think it misses some context here. Steratore said it had to be called on the show. Romo, not a rules official, agreed only mentioning whether it was catchable.
stethant
Contact by the defender caused the WR to fall down while the ball was in the air. That ain't incidental. That's a spot penalty....and an automatic first down!!!! Championship!!! Bucs SB win, Saints title window has closed. I mean it's Christmas all over again in February. Too soon? Tacky? Yeah alright I'll calm down. Edited February 9, 2021 by stethant

Too soon? Tacky? Yeah alright I'll calm down. I give you credit, I missed the fact that the Bucs at the end of the year were not the same team as they were at the beginning. Tawmy had righted the ship and brought his winning ways to TB. Literally looked like a disciplined Pats team out there, complete with Brady and Gronk, and just missing The Hoodie and the jerseys. And I'll be damned if you aren't back to try it all again next year. I wonder what betting odds are

The only thing holding him back is that football is such a team sport, but he's in that tier now. Somebody on another forum compared Brady's post 40 year old accomplishments to that of Jack Nicklaus post 40 (believe he won 3 majors after 40). I told the guy I don't follow golf but know the accomplishments there are all about that individual, where football is the most team oriented sport I know, and Brady has needed an increasing amount of talent around him (best WR group he had, a defense that was the real MVP) to win this ring. But of course since he was named MVP in a few years nobody will remember the defense did anything and it will be all about Tom and his greatness. Every time somebody says something is a sure thing or worth betting on that usually means they haven't placed a bet. That is why I always ask how much they've bet. PS I don't need to win a bet to buy a new car, I own a 2017 Outback with no payment and 4 motorcycles. I'm familiar with the Weeknd because the kids listen to contemporary pop, but they've done a poor job of appealing to the football fan bases with the some of these half time shows. I would be curious how people would respond to the Eagles or Doobie Brothers.

I keep seeing this Cheetos commercial with some guy in a studio with headphones and wondered who it was, since they've been very frequent leading up to the SB I thought maybe it was the weekend. 1 hour ago, Shaft said: I'm familiar with the Weeknd because the kids listen to contemporary pop, but they've done a poor job of appealing to the football fan bases with the some of these half time shows. The NFL isn't trying to appeal to us, in fact they're trying to appeal to non football fans, drag them into watching the SB just for the halftime show. While Shakira and Jennifer Lopez are not my type of music at least they were easy on the eyes. The who in 2010 was probably the last musical act I was a fan of, but they were a shell of themselves by then. The 5 years prior to that would all be what I consider classic rock acts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Bowl_halftime_shows
