PCs and Monitors

Just curious if there is a right or wrong answer for this(or better or worse scenario)...

I never turn any of my PCs off(including my Point Of Sale system)

I do usually turn the monitor off but not always...

One of the reasons I ask is because in the new store I have 2 PCs that are in

metal kiosks and the power for the monitor is tied into everything else...The screen saver

is set to marquee with a saying we want to display while its not being used...

so are there any worries about leaving PCs and Monitors on all the time(excluding being cheap about the electric bill)?

Nothing wrong with doing it, I leave all of mine on at the house all the time. There is a school of thought that it will help the equipment last longer by leaving it on. The heat cycles being what causes the circuit boards to degrade or some such wisdom.

What is the electric cost? Mrs. chester always wants me to turn the computer off at night to save money and I tell her it's close to nothing.

It's next to nothing. My economics professor actually went into too much detail one lecture on it.

My guess is that he had tenure.

I always have turned mine off if I am away from it for more than an hour or so. Just always have. One reason is that it lessens the chance someone could hack into it (small as that actually is anyway) and I just do not like leaving my world up and running for anyone to sit down and mess with if I am not there.

How about just putting it on sleep mode? :D

uh yeah I was wondering Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian on that also. Just go into Display settings and you can set when the monitor goes off (eg 1 hr, 2 hrs etc).

As for heat/elect costs, pretty sure that was much more w/CRTs than it is w/LCDs.

This is very true. I recently went from a 21" CRT to a 22" widescreen LCD (nearly the same total screen area). That CRT was like a space heater.

Anyway, I always put my monitor and comp to sleep, but rarely shut down.

Let's be serious here. My PC is in my home office so only my kid and wife have any access and they both know the password. But I can be a little paranoid sometimes.

And whose fault is that?

I always turn mine off. About 2 years ago a co-worker used to leave his on all the time. One morning after he left for work at 6am he got a call at work at 6:30am that his house was on fire. His wife and 2 young children (4mth old and 3 yr old) perished in the fire. The cause of the fire was electrical and it was the outlet that his computer was plugged into that had caused it. Granted, being an electrical fire it could have been a coincidence that it was the outlet that the pc happened to be plugged into but I am not taking any chances.

:D One of my forensics guys here at work says the best thing to do is leave them on, and turn off the monitor (password protect always) if you will be away for a while. Monitors have a shelf life, the more you use them, the faster they eventually burn out.

The theory behind leaving the CPU on is that the constant heating and cooling off can affect the mechanical parts through incremental expansion and compression with temp changes. Keeping the CPU on and well ventilated is the secret to longevity. Buying an extra internal fan or even simply getting a small fan blowing at the vent holes will keep things at a comfortable and stable temp.

I am not sure how much of a difference it makes at the personal level, but he and his partner have anywhere between 35 and 110 CPUs on-line at anytime and they NEVER turn them off. :D
