LJ Smith Carted off

I haven't seen this reported anywhere else yet so maybe a homer could confirm? Part of the article is quoted below.

8.9.2007

L.J. Smith Carted off Practice Field

L.J. Smith, who underwent sports hernia surgery in late May, aggravated the injury yesterday morning at practice and although nobody is commenting on how serious the injury is, it didn’t look good when Smith was carted off the Lehigh practice fields at about 9:30 a.m.

Smith, who has scored 26 touchdowns in four seasons, was running a routine non-contact drill and had just caught a pass from A.J. Feeley down the middle of the field with linebacker Chris Gocong a step back when he crumpled to the ground at the 25-yard-line. Gocong immediately signalled for the trainers and Smith stayed on the ground until being helped off the field.

“There was no contact at all,” Gocong said. “He was in pain. It’s a shame. He looked great up till that point.”

Smith was taken to the trainer’s tent for an initial exam and then carted back to the Varsity House. Head coach Andy Reid said he didn’t know how serious the injury was.

“He tweaked it,” Reid said. “We’ll see.”

The injury could be a huge blow not only to the Eagles’ offense but to Smith, who is in his contract year and due to become a free ageny this offseason.

IMO the best receiver Philly has other than Westbrook. Would be a blow to McNabb's TD total.

BTW I thought you meant Larry Johnson until I saw the subtitle.

My bad

Looked like it could be misintrepreted that way so I added "Smith" to the title.

Thanks :D

Really? LJ Smith has never seen 700 yards receiving, or caught more than 5 TDs, in any season. And Reggie Brown exceeded LJ Smith in both those categories in his sophomore season.

Exactly. I'm not going to sit here and say the potential loss of LJ doesn't hurt the Eagles, but they can do just fine without him. I saw him as option #3 in the passing game. It's Westbrook and McNabb who are the important ones in that offense.

Note to self: until Empire and 12 Men In The Huddle drafts are complete, make a point so spread more disinformation.

How many TD would it have been if he could actually catch? :D

LJ Smith was already a question mark in my mind, now, it gets worse.

The really bad news, though, is that Shawn Andrews had to go see an ankle specialist and will be spending a couple of days on crutches in a walking cast. Same ankle he had surgery on in his rookie year. Crossing every body part I can that it is not serious.

Interesting question. While Reggie Brown did sport a disappointing 51.65% reception ratio, he caught 8 TDs despite being thrown to in red zone only 7 times. I guess what that tells me is that his drops weren't costing him TDs, so much as yardage and receptions.

Timing is everything...this from todays Philly Inquirer:

Eagles Notes | A rookie tight end catches Reid's eye

Posted on Thu, Aug. 09, 2007

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Andy Reid admitted he doesn't like doing it, but then did it any way.

Asked to name some players who have exceeded his expectations, the head coach listed three names, starting with rookie tight end Brent Celek.

"I hate picking guys out," Reid said. "But obviously you guys have seen the tight-end situation with Celek. It looks like he's done a nice job."

That may not be much of a quote, but it's quite a compliment for Celek, a fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati who has run with the starting offense because of L.J. Smith's delayed return from sports-hernia surgery.

"It's a good feeling, but I can't sit here and dwell on it," Celek said after special-teams practice yesterday. "I know, and I know [Reid] knows, that I need to get a lot better. . . . I have to keep working hard."

Celek has run solid routes and shown good hands during the first two weeks of training camp, but now he wants to see how he measures up in a preseason game. He probably will run with the first-team offense Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. It seems unlikely that Smith will play.

"I just try to take advantage of every opportunity I get," Celek said. "It always helps when you're going against the best of the best, and that's what happens when you're running with the first and second team."

Celek, best known to Rutgers fans for his 83-yard catch and run for a touchdown that helped end the Scarlet Knights' bid to go unbeaten last fall, said he needs to get more consistent catching the ball.

"I feel like there have been a lot of balls that I have let get away," he said.

He's hoping that doesn't happen Monday night against the Ravens, a game he's already been thinking about.

"This is my dream," he said. "I can't say enough about how happy I am to be here. Now I'm going to get a chance to show that I can play in a game. Practice is practice. That's the time to get better and hone your skills. But the games are what matter. I'm excited to get out there against other people besides our own."

Reid also mentioned rookie defensive end Victor Abiamiri and wide receiver Kevin Curtis as players who have impressed him.

"I think most of the young guys on both sides of the football [have done well]," the coach said. "The young guys look like they're very productive right now."

People are writing LJ off pretty quickly. It's still early August, so he's got plenty of time to heal up. I know the guy's injury-prone, but he's got a fair bit of upside in that offence. I was able to draft him late as my backup behind Heap in a 12 team league a few nights ago.

His drops most likely were the direct cause at his only being targeted 7 times in the red zone.
