Wes Welker - What's The Deal?

per Rotoworld (nothing of real substance):

Wes Welker (team decision) was limited in practice again Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's tilt with Buffalo.

Welker isn't listed as having been injured at all. The Patriots can be extremely tricky on the injury report, so we won't know his status for certain until just before game time Sunday night. In a matchup with the Bills, who just lost starting slot corner Kiwaukee Thomas to IR, Welker is worth waiting for.

Of course they are playing Sunday night, so if it is a game time decision it screws you from inserting an alternate if he is not playing. Do you play it safe and start someone of lesser potential in the early games? With no reasoning given, it's hard to make a determination.

I hadn't heard of "team decision" before, but in looking into it a bit, I see it is used at times. It seems to be another way of saying "we're not telling". How can the NFL allow a team to put a player on the injury report with no reasoning? That's BS to me.

From Mike Reiss' Blog on Boston.com

The Patriots have downgraded the following players to out for Sunday night's game:

RG Stephen Neal

S Eugene Wilson

ILB Eric Alexander

Neal, who is the team's starting right guard, had been on the injury report due to his shoulder. He missed the second, third and fourth games this season, but had returned to start the last five contests. He is likely to be replaced by Russ Hochstein, the seven-year veteran who has started three games this season as a top backup (2 at right guard, 1 at center). This also means that Billy Yates (1 start at right guard), who has been inactive for three of the last four games, will likely be active Sunday night.

Wilson (ankle) and Alexander (knee) had not been spotted at practice throughout the week and were not expected to play.

WR Wes Welker and OLB Mike Vrabel, both of whom had been limited in practice with the reason listed as "team decision", have made the trip to Buffalo.

That's the latest.....

From several sources on the net (sorry, no links) basically the Pats let Welker get some rest this week. That makes some sense, considering he plays every offensive down and returns punts. Sounds like he is just being given some rest. With these new injiury guidline rules, if you give a player a couple days off, he has to be listed on the injury report one way or another, because he did not participate in practices. I'm starting him with no worries.

'Team Decision'

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 18, 07 04:53 PM

Some questions have been directed here about the Patriots listing WR Wes Welker and OLB Mike Vrabel on their injury report this week, with the designation "team decision".

Some emailers wondered if "team decision" meant the players were being disciplined. Others asked if the team was hiding an injury.

Here is an official explanation from the NFL regarding the usage of "team decision" on participation/injury reports:

"Team decision is a designation for practice participation. If a player is limited in practice or does not practice by reason of something other than an injury, that limited practice participation must be designated as team or player decision. For example, many teams rest veteran players during practice, especially later in the season.”

Not on the inactive list.....

Inactive analysis

A few thoughts on the inactive players for both teams:

Besides the deactivation of starting right guard Stephen Neal, which was announced Saturday night, there are no surprises on the Patriots' side. Seven-year veteran Russ Hochstein is expected to take his place. The Patriots will dress six receivers for the first time this season. This also marks the first time receiver Chad Jackson is dressed this season, as well as CB Eddie Jackson.

Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, as expected, is not healthy enough to play after injuring his left ankle last Sunday in Miami. The Bills are announcing that seven-year veteran Anthony Thomas (6-2, 221) will start in his place, but fourth-round draft choice Dwayne Wright (5-11, 228) should also see time. With tight end Ryan Neufeld out, the Bills are announcing that Michael Gaines will be the second tight end alongside Robert Royal.
