Savage Beatings
In terms of special effects and a story that holds up VERY well over time IMHO, I think that Close Encounters of the Third Kind was just light years ahead of its time. I own the movie and watched it again recently and was still blown away by the effects, and still got caught up in the story even though I've seen this one numerous times. So what else holds up well by today's standards?

Savage Beatings
Alien/Aliens Hard to believe Alien was released in 1979. That holds up amazingly well.
Ursa Majoris
Star Wars holds up still +1. That opening scene with the space cruiser coming in the top of the screen and just going on getting bigger and bigger blew me away first day the movie came out and still is jaw-dropping today. Azazello1313
it seems like answers should be limited to movies that you might expect to age poorly, because they rely on special effects, or depicting the future, that sort of thing. kinda pointless to include stuff like casablanca and seven samurai. first few that come to mind for me are alien, 2001, clockwork orange, blade runner, and the first two mad maxes. eta: wizard of oz Edited July 22, 2008 by Azazello1313
