Vegas Baby!

Hey Gang,

So we are off to Vegas. I've never been, my wife has been a few times and the other couple hasn't been either.

We are going from Friday August 28th through Wednesday Sept. 2nd. We are staying off the strip at the Wyndham, our friends have a time share.

Planning on seeing a cirque du soleil show (not sure which one yet). Also taking a trek to Zion National Park, was thinking Bryce Canyon, but that might be a bit too far. The Hoover Dam/Lake Mead might be another option.

Any suggestions for a newb? I'm not a big gambler but when in Vegas.....

Looking for tips for Bars/Restaurants/sites/casinos/gentlemen clubs etc.

Thanks!

Damn, what a waste of going for the first time...

Since I'm doing the job search thing right now (AKA Unemployed), taking my sugar mama is a requirement.

As far as a Cirque show, I highly recommend the Beatles "Love" at the Mirage. Jersey Boys also at the Palazzo.

You are about 3/4 mile from the strip, sorta behind Planet Hollywood (A little south of what is considered the middle).

The link John gave gives great info on restaurants and much more. Read thru that and come back w/ more questions.

Last year, Ms Cid and I went out to Vegas for WCOFF. In the week before, we drove out to Moab and Arches National Park, drove through Capitol Reef National Park, then off to Bryce Canyon. We drove through Escalante- Grand Staircase and didn't even have time to stop at Canyonlands. We took the 4 days after WCOFF to go out to Zion. Here's the one thing I will tell you. Vegas is hella fun for partying and shows, but it doesn't even come remotely close in the "stuff you just gotta see" department to our National Parks.

You can easily spend a week or more in any of the National Parks out there so plan ahead, don't just drive up and say, ooo, I gotta see this. Oh, don't forget that the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is only a couple of hours from Vegas as well.

Feel free to ask any questions here or PM me if you want.

Thanks guys,

Good thread with some info on gambling etc.

Yeah it's about 5-6 yrs old and we've already got the flight and hotel taken care of.

As far as cirque du soleil I heard that the Beatles, KA, and O were good....Zumanity was overrated.

Thanks Kid, yeah we thought about the GC, but it's too much in one trip. We're planning on doing it either the next trip to Vegas or when we go to back to Arizona to check out Sedona.

That's the reason we are not doing Bryce as well, I don't want to fly though Zion.

good info here - as cool and fun as Vegas is if you have the time to check out the North Rim of the GC, and the Utah parks- Zion, Bryce, Arches - DO IT

I am planning on a rim to river hike in the fall from the south rim of the GC..........cannot wait

Northern AZ and southern Utah are two of the most beautiful and incredible places in the US

wildcat, the MS and I did that several years ago. Spent the night at the Phantom Ranch down on the Colorado. Of course, we're had to do it in August so it was 84 degrees on the South Rim when we left, 104 at the Colorado (you drop about a mile in elevation). It'll be cooler in the fall and I'm sure you've read and made the appropriate preparations but I think it's important to say this again for safety's sake. Do not hike to the Colorado River and back in the same day and make sure that you have at least 1 gallon and preferrably 2 gallons of water with you at the start of your hike. More people are killed due to dehydration in the Grand Canyon than for any other reason.

Being from out there I'm sure you already know this but it's not something I'm shy about saying.

oh no, we are doing it one trip, should be cool enough when we go - I have hiked quite a bit around the GC, just haven't done rim-river yet. I am pretty acclimated to hiking in hot weather, but ur right- people never have enough water - I am actually reading a book that accounts all the accidents, deaths, and saved lives over the history of the GC - great read.

side note- a couple dudes I know here have done rim to rim TO RIM in a 24hr period - ultra marathoner freaks..............

Regarding Cirque shows, I strongly reccomend you look into getting tickets now as they tend to sell out quick, particularly the weekend shows.

Unfortunately the Rio just shut down their Sapphire pool which was a topless pool... guess some of the working girls found it to be a good place to search for clients and apparently some other shenanigans went on.
