Chasin' Crawdads

The Holy Roller

Ten years ago my youngest daughter and I went to a local breeder and got a chocolate lab pup, the last of his litter. My daughter picked him out immediately because he was so pitiful looking in a pen all by himself. $400 later we're bringing him home with the name "Charlie Brown". For the past ten years he has been the most gentle, good-natured, pain-in-the-ass dog an owner could ever want. His favorite activities these last couple of years has been eating (anything!), going to the creek and chasing crawdads, and laying around in a sunny spot. He still was interested when Mrs. HR and I went for a walk, as long as it wasn't too fast and he somehow or other could associate the destination with getting food once we arrived. About five years ago Mrs. HR brought home a weimerheimer who had been dumped by his owner and had apparently had no loving contact from humans his whole life. JoJo was scared of everything/anything. Except Charlie Brown. Charlie's gentle nature and completely non-aggressive temperment eventually won JoJo over and JoJo's life began to heal. They became inseparable.

This morning I got up and got dressed to go to the barn and do the chores. I saw Charlie laying out by the garden. Apparantly wanting to spend his last moments under the stars, Charlie had gotten out of his bed in the barn last night and went outside to lay down for the last time. God, if You could, take care of the best dog a man could ever want. Maybe take him to the creek and let him chase crawdads a while. JoJo misses him too.

(I realize that with all the pain in the world right now the life of a dog really doesn't rank up there with the suffering being felt by so many. I sure loved him, though.)
