Or you could have had a hood mounted rocket launcher and blasted his ass into oncoming traffic.

Yeah, and I had left th .45 in the other car, too. Bad planning the whole way around on my part.

I believe there's something with motorcycles with air-cooled engines or something that is the legal basis for allowing them to continue moving through traffic as opposed to making them idle along with everyone else in a traffic jam.

I want to say it is legal in Cali, but illegal in a lot of states (pretty sure it is illegal here in Nebraska).

Do you also feel this way about carpool lanes? Because one could certainly argue that there should be a reward for not being, yet another car, on the road.

Car pool lanes are specifically designed lanes which are made for encouraging people to save gas by carpooling. All other lanes are meant to be obeyed by ALL vehicles operating in them. Same as bike lanes are designed exclusively for bikes. If there is a bike lane, then certainly you can keep moving, and you'd be rightly pissed if a car was blocking your bike lane, right? But if you are in a lane with everyone else, then obey the laws and wait like everyone else.

Not sure what point you are making?

Honestly, from your fixation on the clothes and being bitter about letting them move past other traffic, your issues seem to be sort of mean-spirited.

Not intended to be mean at all. In fact, I have the same pet peeve about motorists that zoom to the front of a merge lane or cut you off so they can gain a few car lengths in traffic. We live in a society where, in order to function in the smoothest way, we all need to try to obey both the written and unwritten rules.

Again, I'll pose the question: would you cut people off and jump in line in any other part of society (store, movies, etc.)? if you answer is "no", then why do it on the road?

Never heard that before.

yes it is legal in California but there is a speed limitation (I wanna say 15mph but I could be wrong)

I know it is legal in California as it came up in a traffic school class I was in. Not sure about any sort of speed limit, etc. but it would make sense.

One thing I have heard from multiple sources, but have not yet truly verified, is that one of the biggest unintended consequences of the carpool lanes, at least in California, is that they actually put more cars on the road because instead of the intended action of individual motorists pairing up to drive together, they had a greater number of people stop using busses and trains, etc., and instead they started pairing up to drive, putting that many more cars on the road.

Didn't know you live near here. My family has been going to Crosslake every year since I was about 10 years old. I'll up in your neck of the woods in June.

Bring your bike and we can go for a ride!!! I might even have a sweet outfit for you to wear!!!

So you'll never be a fan of the Raiders then?

just teasing KP

In all seriousness though, I live in Davis - which is the biking capital of the US. (The Biking Hall of Fame was moved here last year).

It's insane.

If you think spandex clad bikers filling your roads are bad, just imagine a bunch of eighteen year olds filling the streets, riding their bikes for the first time since they were ten. Driving from one side of town to the other, I guarentee you'll come close to hitting at least three different bikers.

Last week was Spring Break for the University - downtown was so nice.

I don't pull in front of you. I move along side you and up to the light. When the light turns green, I proceed and stay all the way to the right. When I'm in heavy traffic, I don't have any illusions that people are going to give me much room at all when they pass and facilitate them passing as best I can. However, like I've said before, I tend to avoid these situations because it's no more fun for me than it is for you. So I am rarely the guy you are going through this with.

I almost never have a cyclist pull "in front of me" and operate in a manner that did not allow me to get past them in a very reasonable time. What I see is cyclists moving along side traffic and then just get passed by that same traffic once the light turns. So, frankly, it's hard for me to see your opinion and unbased bitterness and resentment towards cyclists, especially, again, considering your fixation on the clothes.

Back to the "reality vs what you guys claim seems to happen all the time" bit. I can think of only a number of roads in my area that fit the description of what you're talking about. That is, roads that are heavily used for commute and don't have a shoulder to speak of. What I've noticed:

1) At least around here, the speed limit is rarely 50, but usually 40 or so.

2) When there's enough traffic going both ways that getting around cyclists is not feasible (because, be honest, you need the combination of absolutely no shoulder so that you can't pass while staying in your lane as well as have there be on-coming traffic that doesn't allow you to pass by going into the other lane), traffic is slow enough that you're not able to do 40 anyway. So now, you don't have a bike going half what cars are doing, but now it's more like a bike doing upwards of 20 near cars who are doing around 30ish.

Again, I just don't see it enough to allow myself to get nearly as pissed off as you guys get. The way you guys let it get to you, you'd think every day some dude on a bike robs you of an hour of your precious time. But admit it, this is all about some dude holding you up for maybe 30 seconds here or there every couple of weeks or so and every now and then, some read dickhead doing something worse.

And if that is the case, this is not about cyclists, this is about dickheads. Which is an unfortunately unavoidable part of life.

I don't remember where I was, but we were shooting something at night and all of a sudden there were 1,000's of bikers flying down the streets. With police escort. They all looked like students.

My complaint... I have to travel down a small and somewhat winding road to work. There is a highschool not far from the route that I travel, thus there is a lot of traffic. Why the hell do you guys have to be out there during these heavy traffic times? It is basically rush hour and some dude is on his bike doing 15 MPH with a line of traffic behind him who can't pass because he is on a small road and there is a line of autos coming in the other direction... I've had this issue in the afternoons.

To me, it is more of a timing thing. 2:00 Saturday around Kennesaw Mtn. Knock yerself out and have fun, I'll put up with getting stuck behind you. 7:30 AM/5:30 PM on a Tuesday on Old Lost Mountain Rd... I'm not very pleased with you.

Again, I'm really arguing on behalf of others here because, like I've said before, I hate to ride on busy roads. I've got a friend I ride with and dude is so hell bent on going on different rides, he'll freaking ride anywhere. If he drags me on one of these rides, I'll bitch and he'll counter with "It beats riding on the same damned roads all the time, and that's all you ever want to do."

Exactly, the same damned roads that I have learned over time aren't in crappy shape and don't have a ton of traffic.

None the less, as far as why at rush hour. The guy could be commuting, just like you or that's the only time he can get his ride in because he works all day, just like you. I would hope, for his and everyone's sake that he's just on that road for a a short stretch because he's connecting to another, more appropriate road. When faced with that situation, I usually ride like a bat out of hell for that stretch, partially so I don't hold up traffic, partially because I want to get the hell off that road.

If dude is grinding out a long ride on such a road, then I agree that he's being a dick and honestly for no good reason, because I can't imagine he's enjoying breathing that exhaust and having cars up his ass the entire time.

Here's the bike trail that comes in to my town. It gets very busy in the summer. link

The Old Barn Resort is a great place to bike to and isn't too far from me. When you bike through where the picture is in the link, it is alway cool even on a hot day.

Dudes on recumbent bikes annoy me about as much as bikes in general seem to annoy most of the guys here. Was just reminded of that by a photo on that web page.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why anyone rides one. For all the danger and exposure associated with riding a bike, there's one thing you have going for you, you're taller than most of the people on the road. That means there's a chance you'll be seen and, more importantly, you can see what's going on. Not on one of those death traps. You're at freaking wheel level to everyone. All you have is that stupid flag sticking for anyone to know you're there and you can't see a damned thing.

Regardless, they're always ridden by old dorks with chips on their shoulders. And they always have beards. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a dude on one of those who didn't have a beard. And they're the most likely to actually make cycling clothes look baggy. As unattractive as it is to see some fatty stuffed into those clothes, it's that much weirder to see someone who's so damned skinny that their cycling shorts are literally hanging on them.

So, share something with us, what happens to the vagina after it has logged over 4,000 mile on a bicycle seat?

 I don't get pissed at anyone. Its just a pet peeve. And you are right, it isn't everyday, just once in a while...the same way my hemmoroids only flare up once in a while.

But to the bolded part above, here is the issue: in the example we are talking about, there is obviously lots of traffic (since we are talking about cars at a stop while bikes/cycles go past). So, chances are that cars have had to slow down somewhat to pass the bikes in the first place. By slowing down, they are hitting their brakes, which causes the cars behind them to hit their brakes, and slow all the traffic heading in that direction. Then, once those cars are stopped at the light, and the bike passes them and is now back at the front, those same cars have to again slow to get past the bike a second time. Thats a PITA, and unnecessary.

I live in a suburb of Philly where there are cars on all roads, all the time...weekends, weekdays, nights, whatever. Many of these secondary roads have no shoulders, as they weren't developed with bikers in mind. Is that a bummer? Yep, for everyone involved. So what I see alot of is bikers putting their bikes on their cars, driving to Valley Forge Park or similar spots, and biking there. Probably 50% of them. Of the other 50%, most are pretty harmless and ride within the rules of the road. But the other 10% are likely the dickheads you note...the guys that in packs 2-4 wide on our secondary roads, slowing things up for everyone who is operating a car on those roads.

FWIW....cars pay tolls on many roads (turnpike, bridges, etc), which goes to the state for upkeep of those roads. I wouldn't be totally averse to having a fee charged to bikers for using our roads.

Let the guberment impose registrations and registration fees for "cyclist" to ride on the road, until then :tup:BIKE PATH

and riddle me this...why in the 7 he1ls would "cyclist" feel the need to ride on a road that has a speed limit of 50 MPH with NO shoulder (actually about 3 inches of one)?...also why in the 7 hel1s do "cyclist" ride on the left side of the white shoulder line (or stradle it) instead of riding on the shoulder when there is a shoulder?

ANSWER: Cause they think they are the only thing that matters.
