lennykravitz2004
as being reported on E$PN. "Brian Stropolo" (Back Judge) shown on Facebook with wearing Saints gear, as self-described Saints fan. Obvious concern over objectivity. ETA: Link http://espn.go.com/n...ans-saints-game One of the replacement officials assigned to the New Orleans Saints-Carolina Panthersgame Sunday is a Saints fan, according to his Facebook page. After being made aware of the situation this morning, the NFL made the decision to pull side judge Brian Stropolo from the officiating crew and replace him with the alternate who travels with the crew. Stropolo, who is from New Orleans and lists himself on Facebook as an NFL side judge, posted pictures of himself in Saints gear tailgating at an Aug. 25 preseason game. Stropolo did not work the game against the Texans, but he was assigned to Sunday's game in Carolina. Stropolo worked the Week 1 opener between the Cowboys and Giants and posted on Sept. 5: "Thanks to everyone for all the support. The crew did a great job tonight. Next stop September 16th at Carolina vs the Saints." Stropolo's status update drew 73 "likes" and comments such as "Hey, now be nice with those yellow flags for our Saints!!" and "That's awesome you get to be an official for a Saints game! I didn't think they would let you since your (sic) from Louisiana." The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement have gone nowhere. The league has said replacement officials are subject to the same background checks and ethical standards of the locked-out officials. Pope Flick
For a billion dollar industry that has so much money running through vegas as a result of its popularity this can be seen as nothing less than a major embarrassment! The NFL isn't even spending money on checking out these chuckleheads. Wow!
gilthorp
Agree. They need to start with some background on these guys, right after they find a full compliment of referees who can complete full sentences for their explanations. Pope Flick
Deplorable. I'm not trying to engage in hyperbole, but it was a major issue when they found an NBA guy on the take. This is nothing but the worse possible news for the NFL on this one, they simply look lazy regarding the integrity of their game.

Bronco Billy
That he didn't recuse himself and had to be outed instead ought to be sufficient reason that he never works another NFL game. I mean look at the SCOTUS - suppose one of them were a paid advocate for Obamacare before becoming a justice, they would leap to recuse themself from ruling on the issue at the Supreme level, right? And seriously, what the hell is the NFL thinking? How do they not possibly know this beforehand? On facebook, no less. If they're not going to take the replacement refs seriously, how in the Seven Hells are we supposed to?

Well in the case of the opposite - taking paid work to prevent Obamacare - Justice Clarence Thomas should have done so but lacked the integrity you pine for. rajncajn
Meh, I'm more worried about the poor officiating in way of pass interference. If you think none of the real referees have biases or play favorites then you are fooling yourself.

ajh2
According to Yahoo, the guy is a side judge and not a back judge. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/side-judge-pulled-saints-panthers-game-facebook-page-143323464--nfl.html Still, bad call by NFL.
