Perchoutofwater
My dog hasn't eaten since last Thursday when he threw up. We took him to the vet Saturday morning, and they gave him a an antibiotic shot, and another shot to settle his stomach. They also gave us some antibiotic pills for him. Well, he didn't eat anything the rest of the weekend, and we were unsuccessful in getting him to take the pills. So we take him to the vet again Monday morning, they do x-rays, but don't see an obstruction. They keep him overnight. This morning he is worse and is now vomiting blood. Tomorrow we will be taking him to Dallas to get an endoscopy. I asked the vet what she would say his chances of survival were, and all she would say is it could go either way. They are not ruling out a soft obstruction, or it could be a perforated ulcer, or some weird type of infection I can't come close to pronouncing. I'm actually hoping it is the first two, because if it is they can be corrected then and there. If it is an infection, they will have to biopsy and send it off, thus taking time that I'm not sure he has. Perchoutofwater
What's he got? How old is he? Â Sorry to hear that, hoping for the best. Â It could be a soft obstruction (a rag or soft plastic that doesn't show up on x-rays), it could be a perforated ulcer, or a bacteria that is not affected by general antibiotics. I'm hoping for one of the first two, as they are immediately correctable.

Perchoutofwater
Looks like I'm going to be taking him to Dallas today. 2:00pm appointment with a specialist.
SteelBunz
Looks like I'm going to be taking him to Dallas today. 2:00pm appointment with a specialist. Good luck Perch! Â My Dad's cat had a "soft obstruction".....a piece of cellophane/plastic wrap that didn't show up on the xray. The vet didn't catch it and he had to take him to MedVets and insist on an exploratory surgery. Got to get it out before anything becomes necrotic. But I'm happy to report the cat is as healthy as ever! A goofy, fat and sassy "tuxedo cat".....lol. He acts more like a dog than a cat really. They had him wearing a tight "muscle shirt" to keep him from licking his stitches......what a funny sight that was! Â So I'm with you.....hoping it's something quickly correctable! Thoughts and prayers hun.

i_am_the_swammi
Not sure, but I doubt a soft obstruction would cause vomiting of blood. Sounds like a perferation of some kind.... Â Hoping for the best for you and your friend, Perch.

Perchoutofwater
Duke is 1 year and 1 month old. He's a boxer. He's lost over 10 lbs in the last 6 days. We went to the specialist, and the prognosis isn't good at all. The specialist did the endoscopy, and there was not an obstruction. The walls of the stomach and the small intestine are very irritated. He says it is one of three things. One has a long name but is basically a really, really bad case of irritable bowel syndrome. He doubts it is this because it would be "the worst case I've seen in 32 years" according to the doctor. It could be a fungus which is really rare. He says more than likely it is cancer, and if it is we really can't do anything about it. He did some biopsies and sent them off. We will get results either Thursday or next Monday. I'm having a hard time believing it is cancer because it hit so fast, and he's lost so much weight so fast, and I'm an optimist at heart. My wife on the other hand is sure it is cancer.
