cre8tiff
My son turns fifteen and decides to have a Poker party. I invite the Dad's and we have a game of nickel ante while the kids play thier own with chips. So these brats decided since they play Texas Hold 'Em all the time they would try to take my and my buddies money and, "It would be easy." Unfortunately for them, we play dealer calls the game. First game out, five draw, Jacks to open, Trips to win. The kids ---> Took us next to no time to fleece 'em , even with them playing hold 'em when their deals came. They knew no other game than hold 'em. They didn't know seven stud and it's cool variants (high/low Chicago, Black Maria, Mexican Sweat). Or even five draw. Makes me wonder how Hold 'em has negatively affected the variety of the game. I mean having to explain five draw was a real eye-opener. It sure looks like we are raising a generation where the term poker means "Texas Hold 'Em" and that is really ---> Edited April 25, 2009 by cre8tiff
bpwallace49
LOL. I cut my teeth an five draw and prefer playing 7 card stud in casinos. my favorite game by FAR to play is HORSE, but most people dont understand Omaha so I have trouble finding a game. Since all they televise (regularly) is Hold 'Em, that is all these kids know nowadays . . .
TimC
The thing about Hold em is it takes a minute to learn... We actually played some 500 rummy the other night when we lost power. Hadn't played that in eons. Was fun.
AtomicCEO
I miss stud and draw and hate tournament poker. But, the tits is 2 on 2 setback.
Ramhock
My favorite is 7 card Hi-Lo option, 8 to go low. This is the game where you have a choice when receiving your 4 up cards. A card is placed in the middle & you have the option of taking that for free or receiving the next card off the top, for the price of the ante. Not sure if it has a more common name. You can not see the middle card twice. Playing with the same group for 25 years. Started at every 2 weeks, now once/year.
Kid Cid
I miss stud and draw and hate tournament poker. But, the tits is 2 on 2 setback. I've always been a fan of seven card stud. I believe that it is a New England thing, but setback (or pitch as it's called in some places) is just an awesome friggin game. We used to play in tournaments back in CT all the time. One time, my friend and I were playing the last hand of the last game for a $300 payout. I'm in the seat in front of the dealer and the guy in front of me bids 3. I bid 4 without even picking up my hand. It's all or nothing, he most likely had a 3 bid so it didn't really matter. I had the J-10-6 of hearts my partner had A and two off suit 10s. I threw out the J my partner drops the A and the 2 falls. all we needed to do was to clean up the game after that. I spent a good 45 minutes trying to calm the other teams down and explain that we hadn't cheated.
Big Country
Pot Limit Omaha is fast becoming the go to game for the high stakes players, which means it will trickle down sooner than later to the masses. I too enjoy a good HORSE game, but am happy if I can get into a half Hold Em/ Half Omaha game.
whomper
Oh Man. I absolutely loved poker when I was a teenager. We would have hugh games dealers choice that went on for hours. Too much fun. We played a very wide range of games from the basic stud games to the games with wildcards 5 card stud 7 card stud We would play the stud games both regular and no peak We also played these games ( I am not sure if these are just games in our area or universal and maybe you have different names for them) Baseball Night Baseball Follow the queen Jacks or better trips to win (cr8 mentioned that one) Acey Duecey ( Fun and ridiculously stupid all in one game) Black Miriah (sp) Screw your Neighbor (some called it pass the chit) There are others i cant remember but we had a blast Great thread Edited April 27, 2009 by whomper
tazinib1
Love me some 5/7 card stud/draw. But when I'm in a casino, it has and always will be BlackJack.

cre8tiff
Acey Duecey ( Fun and ridiculously stupid all in one game) We always end the night on a game of Between the Sheets (aka Acey-Duecey). The money leader of the night lost everything going "pot" on the Ace-Deuce combo and matching the Ace. Real fun, especially after the beer/scotch/cigars. Seahawks21
I will never again play acey deucey. You lose money faster in that game with better odds than any other game on the planet. Kids will grow up and get sick of Hold 'em, it is simply a starting point. As for me, I prefer... 3 card low ball, two draws Razz 7-stud Hi/Lo 3-5-7 (a variant of guts) I won't play Texas Hold 'Em anymore. Just too boring. You've seen it all after about the tenth time you play the game. There are only two cards, so the possibilities are very limited. I prefer any Omaha game. westvirginia
I think I know what 5/7 stud/draw are. I know rummy. I typically don't gamble, so most of my card games are spades, rook or bid/whist.

Biggest pot we ever played for was a about 3K in an acey duecy game where people were both very greedy and very unlucky. There were actually a couple of rent checks in there. Ms Cid finally took the pot. Bitch only gave me 100 bucks for my troubles.
TitansFan
But, the tits is 2 on 2 setback. Now that I know that setback is pitch, I agree. 2v2 pitch is awesome. We'd play it almost every day during my senior year in high school. Which version of pitch do you play? We'd usually play 10 point, though we'd also play 13 point on rare occasions. Sadly I haven't played pitch at all since then. While I may not know many different games, I at least know the basics like 7 card stud or 5 card draw lol. I knew Gin Rummy at one time but I've pretty much forgotten how to play. Also, while they're not poker games, spoons and bullchit can be fun on occasion. AtomicCEO
I used to really enjoy the strategy elements of the drinking game "chalupa". You really have to just ditch high cards until you see in the cards and the faces of the people around you that you can shoot for your exit. Succeed, and you massively promote... fail and you sink. BeeR
I miss stud and draw and hate tournament poker. Me too. When we used to play in HS, 5 card draw and 7 card stud were staples, with simple wrinkles like baseball/midnight baseball, follow the queen etc. Hold em underwhelms me - but what I really hate is how the trend whores latched onto it like a dog with a rag in its mouth and got into this (IMO) gay "official" poker, with the tourney BS and generally trying to be "professional" about it. fn dorks. Just give me a handful of guys, some booze, and chips (I don't care if they're the cheap ass r/w/b plastic ones either (in fact f*** the high-dollar "vegas" chips) - and go dealer choice around the table. PS lmao @ acey-ducey. It is stupid but still managed to be a really fun change-up. Every time the dealer choice came up and someone said this, some would go "yeah" and some would groan. Nothing like having a huge pot, a K and 2 come up, guy goes "POT!" and a 2 comes up lol

The Holy Roller
We always end the night on a game of Between the Sheets (aka Acey-Duecey). I'm not sure if Acey-Duecy is the same but our last game of the night is "In-Between" where you flip two cards then bet if the third drawn card is between the first two. I've seen some incredibly bad luck and ridiculous pots. Quite entertaining after the obligatory beers/scotch.

Our most notable in-between was a pot about $300 and there were 3 cards left. My friend is given the opportunity to wipe the cards and start over with the new deck or go with the last three. He goes with the 3. A-2 flops and he goes nuts. Flip the next card over..... A. Double burn/Double pot and we all go crazy. The look on his face was priceless. I'm from MO and heard it as in-between or Between the Sheets (which I think is a lot less ghey than Acey-f'n-Duecey. ) Double pot burns are the bomb. Especially if you have someone egging people on. And a lot of drinks in you.
