The Vikings are officially in compliance with the NFL’s roster requirements and have trimmed their roster from 80 players to 53. Here’s a look at how they got down to 53 and which players comprise the roster.

To get from 80 to 53, the Vikings waived/released the following players: RBs Tristan Davis, Caleb King and Alexander Robinson; FBs Matt Asiata and Ryan D’Imperio; TE Jeff Dugan; WRs Manny Arceneaux, Stephen Burton, Juaquin Iglesias and Jaymar Johnson; OL Ryan Cook, Chris DeGeare, Byron Isom and Thomas Welch; DL David Akinniyi, Tremaine Johnson, Cedric McKinley and Stylez White; LBs Heath Farwell, David Herron and Ross Homam; DBs Tony Carter, Ryan Hill, Cord Parks (Injured) and Devon Torrence.

The Vikings also placed LB Jasper Brinkley on the Reserved/Injured list.

“This is a difficult day every year because of the tough decisions that have to be made,” Vikings VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman said. “We had a number of young players that made strong impressions throughout training camp and the preseason in practices and games. They earned a spot on our roster and we will count on them to contribute this season and help us accomplish our goals.”

That leaves the following players on the Vikings rostser…

QBs: Donovan McNabb, Christian Ponder, Joe Webb

RBs: Adrian Peterson, Toby Gerhart, Lorenzo Booker

WRs: Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian, Michael Jenkins, Greg Camarillo, Devin Aromashodu

TEs: Visanthe Shiancoe, Jim Kleinsasser, Kyle Rudolph, Allan Reisner

OL: Charlie Johnson, Steve Hutchinson, John Sullivan, Anthony Herrera, Phil Loadholt, Jon Cooper, DeMarcus Love, Pat Brown, Seth Olsen and Brandon Fusco

DL: Jared Allen, Kevin Williams (suspended Weeks 1-2), Remi Ayodele, Brian Robison, Everson Griffen, Letroy Guion, Christian Ballard, Adrian Awasom, Fred Evans, D’Aundre Reed

LBs: E.J. Henderson, Chad Greenway, Erin Henderson, Kenny Onatolu and Larry Dean

CBs: Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin, Chris Cook, Asher Allen, Brandon Burton, Marcus Sherels

Safeties: Husain Abdullah, Tyrell Johnson, Jamarca Sanford, Eric Frampton, Mistral Raymond Specialists: LS Cullen Loeffler, P Chris Kluwe, K Ryan Longwell

“I’m excited about the makeup and character of our 53-man roster as we prepare for the 2011 regular season,” Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said. “It’s extremely difficult to tell players that we are going in a different direction without them. It’s especially hard when they are veterans that have been quality players and starters for us over the years and have been a big part of our team, on and off the field. They are good people and good players and we wish them the best in the future.”

Notes:

The only big surprise cut was Tony Hillis, who started several games last year, and was the starting RG during the first two pre-season games. Doug Legursky took the job away from him, and now Hillis was cut, due to the fact that he doesn't have the flexibility to play both Guard & Tackle.

It was another good draft, as five draft picks made the roster, with a 6th on I/R (Batch). Also, one un-drafted rookie made the team (TE - Weslye Saunders)

gotta say, I'm disappointed to see Merriweather and Tate go. I don't think of either as a bust. Tate was with Nicks at UNC and we all know how good Nicks is now, Tate was better @ UNC. Never really had a fair shot at starting.

I never really liked Merriweather and thought he was overrated. I think the only reason why he made 2 probowls is because the players who where elected to go where hurt and could not make it (not positive) .......but what surprised me is they also let Sanders go so I never thought they would cut Mettiweather.

wonder if Eagles would get Merriweather? They liked him leading up to the draft and they do need a safety. But with his character issues I'm not sure if Andy would take him.

they are and the one time they took a risk, it was TO and so they are even less likely to try that again....

Vick was a bench player and wasn't a factor until Kolb was hurt and they have had him on a short leash up until recently

I was saying TO....

 Oh thats rich. Casually forget Vick then when you get called out on it you say it didnt count because Vick was a bench player

yeah....he wasn't expected to start for the Eagles....and I didn't realize I got "called out" on it....

the Eagles generally don't want the face of their team to be a troublemaker ....or even a starter for that matter...

So the Eagles are ok with poor character players as long as they arent starters ? As far as you getting called out. Yes, blatantly leaving out Vick in a poor character discussion is weak sauce and coming back with

is even weaker. Just admit, The Eagles , as many other teams have done including Dallas, will sign a poor character guy if it helps their chances to succeed.

....are you serious?...they had McNabb and Kolb at the time and even after one year still named Kolb the starter....I could care less about who has what character issues because I wish they would take the risk and sign the guy who the Pat's released (I already forget his name) because we need the safety help...

but they are harsh on guys with character issues and this also affects their drafting because they'll overlook a player with great talent and poor character in favor of a bookworm that speaks well and doesn't speak up....

once in a blue moon you have a TO...and a Vick type move...and McNabb nearly begged the FO to sign Vick as well....he was a former #1 pick who had success in the NFL and he was still the #3 QB until we drafted Mike Kafka...and then Kolb got hurt and Vick was made to start because his running ability was a better fit due to our bad OL....otherwise Kolb may have been able to do some things imo..

Nah.. they just hand ex-cons $80 million

both you and whomper are missing my point - you think that I am calling them the golden boys of the NFL and that I wouldn't want them to sign a player with character issues....check their track record since Andy Reid arrived....they won't even look at the Pat's safety that was just cut...as much as I want them to...

* WR Chastin West, undrafted free agent.

* WR Tori Gurley, undrafted rookie in '11.

* QB Graham Harrell, undrafted free agent..

No hugh surprises except GB is keeping 5 WR's and 5 TE's

I figured at least one of West or Gurley would stick; and thought Harrell had done enough to merit a spot on the 53-man as well. I'm sure GB would like to get all of them on the practice squad.
