Words With Friends Tournament #3 - Who's In?

Avernus took me down in a clean sweep, 382-374 and 360-308. I trailed the whole way in both, literally from his first play on. Basically caught him in the first game, and was shocked to see him skip his turn, when I only had 3-4 letters left. I got to within single digits, but absolutely could not find a place to play my very last letter (and "L"). Tried every spot and combination I could think of, but not a single one worked. Had to pass, and he then finished the game. I knew that was my chance to try to force a split. :bash:

The second game was a blowout from the start... I kept thinking I might get an opening to play something big, but it just never happened. Hats off to him, as he simply didn't leave me many options, while taking advantage of some very nice ones himself. This isn't an excuse, but I find it much harder to do well at this game when I don't have a lot of time on my hands. Played a lot of the first tournament while traveling (sitting in the car, at the airport, etc.), where it's easy to take your time and explore options. This week, I've been working a ton, and don't find much time to play... So, in an effort to keep things moving, I found myself sometimes just playing something, without thoroughly looking for a better option.

That's not to take anything away from Avernus... Part of the reason I felt like I sometimes didn't take enough time was that it seemed like his game to win, from the start. Not that he was getting the right letters, necessarily, but rather that he seemed determined to get revenge for the last time we played. :) In other words, he didn't waste a single move, while I felt like I might have, a couple of times.

The ironic thing about this game, and how much time one spends at it, is that I got accused of cheating because I was taking too much time in between turns. As if, when I don't play for a few hours, it's because I'm frantically scouring a cheat website. And people sometimes wonder why they get labeled as a nuckin' futjob.

Good games, Avernus. You were clearly the better player.... This time. ;)

I can relate because in the last tourney we had I was not into it at all and was overwhelmed with a bunch of crap....which is no excuse but I wasn't focused at all but it didn't seem to matted because I was just being outmatched...I lost to you in the tourney before that I think...

and taking your time between turns shows that you are not a cheater....and I am currently playing someone that I know is cheating because I beat him something like 12 out of 14 games in a stretch and now he is suddenly winning by coming up with words that might be straight out of the latin dictionary, it is like I am playing someone totally different every game...

I also focused more on defense against you because you kept taking advantage of every chance I gave you the time before so I placed my tiles wisely and these might have been the best two games of WWF I have played because I did not waste a single turn....and the one game you made close was me sitting there with a U and nowhere to put it which would have changed the course of everything if you pulled that out and stole the momentum - the rubber match would have been yours to take imo...

good games regardless, especially the first one....

I'll be really honest. I nearly resigned after you played oolachan this morning. I'm gonna finish this game and take my loss like a man, but you've played about a dozen words that I have never even seen before. I can expect one or two per match, buy I find it hard to believe you just guessed your way to oolachan or qanat.

The first thing I do when I get my 7 letters is a try all different combinations using the 7 letters and what's on the board and keep hitting play. If it goes through, awesome + 35 extra points. If it doesn't, I scale it down until I'm forced to use a smaller word. I've ended up using words I never thought would work and certainly don't know, like aarrgh, achoo, oolachan, manward, dauts, edemas, saddhu, milneb, cowage, bovines, juntos, paucity, foetal, totterers, hoise, fleys, durns, ohias, qanat, etc. I think just putting anything down and seeing if it goes through makes the game even more fun instead of only using what you know and can see. Why not guess and check, it certainly can't hurt as the worst that happens is you get told that it's not a word. I'm kinda shocked that more people don't do this. It's really not hard to do and actually takes less time and thought than if I actually sat there trying to construct words I did know, which of course I also do. It also helps that I'm a teacher who has been put through many language based trainings/programs (Wilson, Orton Gillingham, Corrective Reading, etc.) which focus on word study and understanding/mastering word patterns. It's what I teach.

I hear ya. But definitely to each is own. I love when I can slap on the board some ridiculous combinations and it works. Sometimes it works but many more times it does not. I play a lot since I've started and have seen a ton of words and have learned how to play differently. I love this game! If you look at many of the words you listed they look just like regular words with a letter(s) added or missing. Maybe I can just see things differently. Regardless, great games!

irish, you are full of cap. that's crap without the r.

Sure is a whole lot of explaining of why someone went from 3 letter words to unexplained almost foreign words over night. It's the reason why I stopped playing him after about 12 straight big wins over him he started playing all these "just got lucky" words literally over night. Cheating apps do not add a fun atmosphere to the game. But as was quoted earlier to each his own just isnt the way I operate

Not such a valid point, as my progress wasn't overnight at all and I certainly didn't go from using 3 letter words to foreign in the blink of an eye. I've learned a boatload playing some really great players (both you and Bp are in that group) and throwing any combinations on the board was not something I always did. However, I was asked a question, so I answered. If someone wants to play a game, I'm game. If not, oh well. I've gone through to much crap in life to worry about such nonsense. Now, I'm done explaining.

Hmm. In scrabble, if you make a word up and it isn't in the dictionary you get penalized. In WWF, you can spray letters all over the place and hope they work.

Just a shortcoming of the game. I think sons people want to play by scrabble rules when WWF isn't set up that way.

Very true. I actually thought there might be a penalty if a word didn't go through when I first started submitting anything. Certainly a shortcoming as it allows a different style of play for sure.

I started a game Irish10163.

I guess I'm playing you as part of the tourney or is this just for fun?

Sometimes I play a small word that I don't think should be a word and unfortunately it works. ;)

Maybe some day you can be as good at it as irish.

I finally beat Rajn in 3 very close games.

322-321 Rajn

382-317 Me

364-347 Me.

Tbam65 whenever Mrs Gopher is ready. I will be on vacation starting sunday but should be around tomorrow.

This was definitely an epic battle. That first game you took it to me pretty good, the second I just got lucky and squeeked out that win. Again, I'm sorry for the slow play, just got a lot going on right now with work, (no excuses) but it definitely affected my play. The third match I got a little more on my game, but you were playing a great defensive game. When we finally started getting toward the end I just refused to take the easy play with the Q & Z because I knew I wouldn't have a chance if I did. My only chance was to open up the triples to you & hope I could get a good play off of them & it worked like a charm. With my last play I was up, what, about 10 points? I had 3 letters left, something like a B, G & I or E & I had a place to play them all. But you played the rest of your tiles & I was done. That's the way all these games should play out IMO. Good stuff T & good luck vs the cheaters. ;)

Avernus beat me and moves on.

the 3rd game was very good but the whole series was horribly ruined...

the first game ended with me losing, but I was up 261-105 due to some tile swapping and skipped turn rule even though my turn was up because my phone dinged when I was at a red light and I decided I was going to take my turn when I arrived at Dunkin Donuts but when I sat down it said I had lost....

at this point I didn't even want to play anymore because I felt like I was on fire even while losing the other game we were playing at the time by around 70 pts or so...

so me and cap'n agreed to make the series 1-1 since I was clearly robbed and I felt like he still had control of the other game - fair is fair considering he could have made a comeback in that game as could I in the other (which he clearly showed in game 3)

the 3rd game appeared to be mine to win from the jump when I threw down CRASHER on my first turn using up all of my tiles and even more so it was pretty much spelled out for me as it was aside from the blank tile......I think I was up by as much as 150 or more in this game and cap'n still managed to come within about 20 on two occasions and almost won when I was stuck with a J right before my final turn....there was only one spot that I could see placing it and it was pretty much the difference in me winning 421-408....I still had 5 tiles left (all worth 2 or more including an F and a V)

a great final game to cap off a dysfunctional round....at least I got some sort of vengeance from the last time we played...

Yep, great final game in the end as I got luck with a couple big words to make it closer at the end.

I think the game you lost was the I was up and then the skipped turn rule came into play and made the game over with me winning as I had the higher score at that time. I agree its a strange annoying rule. The other game you were crushing me so we just called that an automatic win for you and went right to the third game where you were in control from the start. TITRABLE for something like 95 pts made it a game again but then you just kept playing solid words while I struggled to get decent tiles and position to keep up. Good luck in the next round.

im not opposed to an occasional plug and play when facing a possible big score or when defense is needed but plug and play as a strategy defeats the purpose to me.

Peepin and Sheik must be playing the longest first-round match in our short history... They were headed to a tie-breaker nearly a week ago. Meanwhile, Avernus is 3 rounds ahead of them (in the Final Four).

On a side note, my wife's pregnancy is going about as quickly as their match... She was due last Monday (6/25), and was scheduled to be induced this morning. However, she was asked to call ahead of time, to make sure they had room for her, and sure enough... four others are in labor and/or on their way to the hospital. So, I guess we wait for the hospital to call and let us know when we can come in. Meanwhile, she's stressing at the idea of the baby growing an ounce a day at this point.

Are you saying that Irish is the only guy that puts letters on the board without knowing if it's a word?

the game where I was up by almost 160 was the one where the skipped turn rule came into play.....I still don't fully get it and it should have not applied anyways because I had a turn to take, I just couldn't take it until I had a chance to clearly look at the board to see if I had anything more than what stood out at a glance...

the other game you were up by like 70 and that was the game that I forfeited to make it 1-1...it seemed like those two games were polar opposites from the jump to be honest....

at least the last game was epic to make up for it....I needed to be up by as much as I was just based on our last matchup alone...
