ASSUMING FAVFE RETURNS IN 05!

Also, if you suggest firing Sherman as GM or Coach, who are your suggestions for replacement? For the 2nd year in a row (check the archives) I want Sherman fired as both, Romeo Crennell as Head Coach and a similar offensive system to keep Favre comfortable.

This team needs at least 2 new starters on the D line (replace Hunt & Kampman), a new LB and a new SS (bye Roman!). If those positions aren't addressed, we'll have the same fate in 2005- an early exit in the playoffs.

Devil- unfortunately, we don't have ENOUGH 300+lb linemen to stop the run. Grady Jackson is our only good run stopper. Cletidus "Doper" Hunt is barely 300 and too stoned to care about football, KGB is a pass rush specialist who can't stop the run and Kampman is overmatched at 290 to be an every down DE.

Roethlisberger MAY prove me wrong this year, but again, name the last 1st round draft pick QB to win a SB with his original team....

Defense wins championships, high priced/high draft pick QB's do not. EVEN IF Pitts wins the SB, I still stick to my theory. It's not Roethlisberger throwing 50 TDs and 4000yds that is getting them to the SB, it's Defense, a strong running game and special teams.

Alex Smith (or any other QB in 1st 1-3 rds) would PREVENT GB from getting to a SB because they would still have a terrible defense.

I bet Sherm will no longer be GM and someone will be hired from inside - whom, I don't know. I don't mind him as a coach (not a ringing endorsement, but an endoresement). No way Harlan brings anyone else in at this point.

I actually think Roman can start alongside Sharper. The Packers needs, in order of importance (through the draft, free agency, or our own free agents): DE, OG, OLB, DT, QB, CB, TE

I think best case for the Pack, although I don't know if the cap would permit it (not in any order)-

1. Restructure Wahle's deal and bring in a mid-level guard to start in place of Rivera.

2. Sign a DE - Ironic in light of Reggie dying, but the Pack needs a force on the line. John Abraham will command a lot of money and may not be worth it, but the Pack may need to bring someone like him in. Kamp and KGB make great fifth and sixth players off of the bench.

3. Sign a free agent corner and move Carrol to nickel, Thomas to dime, Hawthore to FA.

4. Draft/sign someone to replace Navies. Barnett can be a starter in the league and I think Diggs is extremely underrated. Navies, however, doesn't have a head for the game.

5. Resign Bubba and Martin - I don't think Bubba will demand that much on the open market because he isn't as athletic as Heap, Gonzalez, Shockey, Gates, Crump, etc. He is a good fit for the Pack's West Coast offense, however.

6. Offer Poop the first round tender - Option to match the offer of someone else, if not get a 1st and a 3rd. Not bad.

7. Draft DT depth - Now way Grady plays a full season next year, Clitideus sucks, and everyone else is inconsistent/not very good. Ugh.

8. Find a QB to groom. Favre will be back.

Other than that, I think we're good to go for the Super Bowl.

PS - In case it isn't clear, Poop is Najeh.

It hasn't happened yet, but I'd say within the month, it'll be Peyton Manning.

ASSUMING Favre returns:

- get rid of Slowik, Kurt Schottenheimer, and Jethro Franklin - the units under these guys (defense, DBs, DL) showed ZERO improvement throughout the year; I think one of the major failings of the last offseason was not getting a better DC. Jim Bates is available, and the Miami D performed at a decent level under him (not to mention the entire team when he was interim coach), why not hire him?

- improve special teams (and NOT by drafting a punter); Bonamego's coverage teams seem pretty solid, but their best returners appear to be Davenport and Ferguson, who are needed elsewhere. The lack of big returns seems to indict the scheme somewhat.

- I'm undecided as to whether or not to give Sherm one more chance at GM. His draft record is TERRIBLE, which is the most d*mning indictment, but he has done reasonably well at finding undrafted FAs and waiver wire nuggets (T Fisher, K Barry, G Jackson). Ideally, you could hire a GM with the understanding Sherman remains as coach until he gives good reason to be fired, but usually a GM wants to bring in his own guy. I think Sherman is a solid HC, but he really reminds me of Marty Schottenheimer - guy who can manage a team steadily through the regular season, but just doesn't get it done in the playoffs for whatever reason.

- Keep at least one of Rivera and Wahle, preferably Wahle (love ya, Marco, but 32 is gettin' up there); Scott Wells and Kevin Barry have shown that they should be able to maintain depth on the line as long as GB doesn't lose too many guys.

Mostly, I think they should draft defense, defense, defense. Call me Pollyanna, but at the very least, Barnett and Carroll appear to have the ABILITY to play in the NFL, but their failure to learn from their mistakes reflects poorly on the coaches, IMO. The constant penalties and high level of turnovers is a sign of a poorly coached team. And that starts at the top.

Speaking of Favre - any other GB fans sick of this "is he gonna retire?" sh*t? It's been going on for what feels like 3 years now. I'd LOVE for him to stick around and become #2 on the all-time passing records (if the numbers I saw are correct, assuming he plays at his standard level (25+ tds), Marino's td record is about 2 seasons away), but the whole state gnashing its teeth gets a little tiresome.

Favre says he has the desire and it's pretty apparent he's not slipping physically; if his life circumstances make him decide to hang it up, so be it - but just shut the f up about it.

The retirement talk is blown out of proportion, but Favre feeds into it somewhat. His postgame interview made it pretty clear that a loss like that took a lot out of him. He's also talked about the drain that is minicamp and training camp, so you wonder about the toll it all takes. It's way over-analyzed, but Favre encourages some of that himself. I believe he was the one who brought it up a few years ago, and he didn't do much to quell the debate once it started.

First need is a new GM - and don't be afraid to look outside of the organization to find one. Sherman can still advise him esp on late round sleepers.

The defense needs a complete overhaul. Don't be afraid to make eye-popping moves to do this. Needless to say, that includes the coaches on the defansive side.

Yeah, it was Aikman. Elway was drafted by the Colts and he was at the end of his career. This was the formula I was HOPING we would have followed in Favre's later years--- strong running game/O line. Check. Strong defense. D'oh! Not in GB!

I like Romeo Crennell, but who are some of the Def Coords or top D assistants on other good defenses, like Pitts, Balt, Jax, Philly, Car??

I think Sherman needs to give up his GM responsibilities. My 2 reasons are:

-Drafting a punter way too early and trading up to do so. Possibly cost the team a lot of depth. There is a reason punters don't get drafted early: guys like Barker are always hanging around looking for a job.

-Everytime he makes a good move he follows it up with a bonehead one. Evidenced by the trade of Marques Anderson to the Raiders for draft picks. At the time I thought this was a great move, he got some picks to build depth for a guy that just wasn't working out. Of course Sherman the GM blew it by then sending those picks to KC for Tru'luck, an undersized DE who couldn't break into the starting lineup for the awful Chiefs' defense and contributed very little to the Packers'.
