Drafting with one person missing

I just found out last night that one guy can't make the local draft tomorrow afternoon. I have been trying since then to find a sub to either take his team or just draft for him. No go so far and we can't change the date as people are traveling.

Any ideas or past examples of how to handle the rest of the league drafting for him?

He is fairly new so he won't have his own set of cheatsheets for us to go off of. My first thought is to print out a set from some random free website (suggestions?) and have a vote each time he is up as to which position he would draft and pick the best available on that cheatsheet. It's a fairly low money, fun league so I don't see much 'cheating' as far as trying to get him a bad team. Plus it's a keeper, so the top 15-20 best guys will be gone when we start.

Can't the guy call in to make his picks?

If you use ADP the absent guy is going to end up with all the overvalued players. I guess it is his fault for not showing up.

Having the whole league vote every time would be a debacle. don't even try this......

I've called into drafts before and it's no big deal. Everyone else drafting for the guy seems like basically the last resort and, frankly, one not even worth exploring.

Assuming he's not going to be on a boat or something and can maintain even the slightest amount of contact, I would suggest the following:

Obviously first choice is the guy just gets a call every time it's his pick and you update him on who is out there.

If that's not feasible, draw for draft slots and, if he doesn't get the 1st pick, give him the last pick. That way, he makes two picks in a row. Sure, if he's a top 3-4, that sort of sucks for him, but it's better than being handed a team and it's his fault he can't make the draft of be on alert every round. Then, call him up and either catch him up or read him off the handful of names that ADP says are there. Whatever he prefers and can handle. Obviously, if he asks if another dude is there and he is, you tell him. Then he makes two picks and you guys can continue.

Certainly not ideal, but given the situation...

My league rules state that if you cannot make the draft, it is the responsibility of that owner to find a sub to draft for him. A couple of years ago, this actually happened (the only time in my league's history this happened), and he did a decent job all things considered. If he can't find one, then they have to submit a detailed draft sheet, which we would use to draft his players for him. Tough break, but at least it's just a for-fun league.

We had this happen with 2 people last year - the first person was in europe and did get on for the first few picks, after that we used his custom rankings and two of us made decisions on positions he would pick. The second guy was at the draft and a very big family issue came up and he had to leave before it started, again we used his custom cheat sheet and two guys made judgements on the picks. The whole time I kept thinking that these teams were going to end up getting screwed... Of course they ended up finishing 2 and 3, so what do I know.

I think your only option is to print out ESPN's rankings and have someone trust-worthy make judgements on his roster. It sucks to be the person making the judgements though and it can be tough to stay impartial when you are going to draft for yourself a few picks later.

I have to work or I would offer to call in to help you out.

Thanks for the replies.

He got called into work and may be able to get ahold of us occasionally, but not practically.

As I said, he's fairly new and won't have any 'custom' cheatsheets.

That would be funny, having huddlers make the picks. While the league has been around for 10+ years and everybody is a big football fan, none are FF geeks and I've really slacked off in the last few years. A huddler would probably wipe the floor with everybody else.

Found a substitute drafter!

Funny thing is, it's a girlfriend of one of the other members and she will probably do better than the missing guy would have.

And now she's got it in her that she wants to outdraft her boyfriend.

Has what in her?

Our rules used to state that a player either had to find a substitute, set up auto picks ahead of time or we would default their profile to pick the best ADP player available.

With the last option, one owner got a solid team and made it to the playoffs for the first time ever. He tried it again the following year and ended up in last place.

ETA: We use MFL (Who doesn't? ) :bash:

Last time this happened, we basically went straight BPA according to a cheat sheet, and had a brief discussion about the draft picks (nothing like "oh, no, he can't take him because I was going to take him with the next pick!", more like "well, he's already got 3 RBs but no WRs, and the WR and RB are probably similar values so let's take the WR" or "that guy is out for the first 6 weeks").....what was funny was when we got done we went "man, this guy has a GREAT team" but due to injuries it ended up being near the bottom of the league.

You have to know her boyfriend is coaching her up for the draft like "and whatever you do don't draft Stafford or Jordy Nelson, especially if you draft right before me.

Not really the fairest way to go about it - but then again I suppose it is if you do it from round 1 on.

The commissioner in our league has always used some stupid generic top 250 players list (I'm convinced he uses Yahoo's rankings). Several times we've had the same guy not be able to make the draft - the commissioner will just use his list, and give him whoever is ranked highest based on need. So round 1 he'll get the top ranked player on the list regardless if it's a RB, WR, or QB, round 2 will be the next highest ranked player, round 3 will be the top ranked QB or WR (if he picked a RB in rounds 1 and 2) based on ranking or need. Works out pretty well - but as someone mentioned earlier, he usually ends up getting players that more than likely could have been had in the following round..

Anytime you rely on other members of the same league to put together a team for someone who cant be there to draft/auction their own, you are asking for trouble, IMO. I guess I should have prefaced that by saying if its a competitive league and/or for decent $. Free league or family/friendly league, etc obviously do what you gotta do if someone cant be there. But if you have some $ on the line and guys take it seriously, I believe you cant have a team assembled by other members of the same league and maintain the integrity of the league. Just too much conflict of interest and its likely to slow the proceedings down as well. I am commissioner of a re-draft and a policy we hold strict to is (if an owner cant be at the draft or online in the draft room) he must find someone not already in the league to draft his team for him. I understand emergencies come up which can throw a wrench in the works. We've been fortunate that hasnt been an issue for us but (if it ever does) there are usually a couple cats at our draft just for the food/booze and to see how it shakes out. They also provide a nice contingency in the event an owner has to miss the draft unexpectedly.

We don't have a league rule governing this but that's pretty much how we handle it. In fact my co-commish had a conflict for a few years with something else and couldn't get that changed. He'd come for the beginning of the draft, go over rule changes whatever, then make his first few picks and pass the draft off to somebody else. One time that person was another team owner, and nobody had an issue with it. If the commish trusted him, to not only draft well for him but be impartial and not use that to his advantage, we were all ok with it.

I feel bad for a commish put in the position like this. Hopefully the absent owner made some attempt to find his own sub first, otherwise I think it shows a lack of interest and the idea that "its the commish's problem to deal with".
