chiefjay
The Zoo is a good idea? Have some games or something for the kids to go along with the viewing of the zoo.
twiley
I think your best bet is a park with that budget. If kids are allowed you can rent out carnival games and face painters. If there are no kids, I would recommend places like this if they have them in your area but 5K may not cover it. cdrudge
I use to be on my company's employee board. Company size is 500 and the total attendance at the events was usually 400-600. The activities that we did for the summer picnic included going to the zoo with a fried chicken boxed lunch and a local single-A baseball game with a hamburger & hotdog catered buffet in the picnic area. The last two years the event has been held at a decent sized minigolf "fun park" that also has batting cages, go-karts, a driving range, and arcade. It was catered with sack lunches by the company that cooks for our cafeteria. If you live near an amusement park, you might try there as well. Presuming you want to pay for the employee and their family, it probably wouldn't cover everyone for $5k though.

Skilly
Summer company picnic says burgers, dogs, chicken, potato salad sitting in the sun too long, and beer.......lots of cold, keg beer. Mmmmmm! If you can reserve a park with a baseball diamond and some grassy areas for those air-bouncy things for the kids, you got all you need.
