Minnesotans are....um....shall we say "careful" with their money at the best of times. These are not the best of times and most people here are grimly hanging on to every $ they don't have to spend.

Still, this problem does not bode well for the stadium the Vikings want. This morning's paper mentioned that the Vikes are going to try presenting the new stadium as a "public works project", hanging on the coattails of the forthcoming economic stimulus, but the Minnesota legislature just fell about laughing when they were told about it.

Given the proximity of 2011 and the end of the Metrodome lease, this could be the last playoff to be held here.

That's the strange part about this situation...all those cheaper seats are gone. You want to buy a ticket now, you're talking probably $100 seats, or more, are whats left.

With all that said....its not like the place is going to be half empty, at this moment, there are over 60,000 tickets sold.

That being said you would think that some big businesses or corporate sponsers would pick up the tab there. Or a better scenario would be more Eagles fans coming into the stadium.

Zygi want government infrastructure funds to buy him a new stadium rather than check bridges and highways? Nice man.

That's exactly why the legislators were laughing. Obama's stimulus will fork over for a roads and bridges program but it isn't going to fork over to build the bloated NFL billionaires another stadium.

If there was a playoff game at Arrowhead it would have sold out in about 4 minutes.

Cannot believe that game is still not sold out. Wow.

No kidding. If you don't have $100-200 for this put it on your credit card. How often can you cheer on your team in the playoffs?

It would be sold out in about an hour in Green Bay.

You're talking about the same people that may have elected Al Franken as their senator.

Exactly. And Jesse Ventura. And Michel Bachman.

Franken 's been to Iraq several times, worked to get soldiers extra helmet protection and funds for body armor and has done more on issues than most realize.

Crazy. My buddy sent me an invite for a playoff fantasy game at NFL.com Just went there to sign up and the banner ad says " Buy tickets now for the Vikings playoff game!"

Un f'n real!

For most fans this seems absurd. And the billionaire owner wants federal funds to build him a new stadium in the city where people died because a bridge collapsed.

The team should buy them and hand them out.

With no basis whatsoever for naming these, I'd expect Miami, Arizona, San Diego and Jacksonville to be on that list.

Its the fair weather fan thing isn't it???

I just recall each of these playing in stadia where rows of empty seats were visible.

Rows of emptys seats aren't visible in Jacksonville....they cover them with tarps.

I can't blame Arizona fans all that much for apathy...this is one of the Cards' best seasons in 30 years and they probably wouldn't even have a winning record if they played in a real division.

Miami should have gotten a following by mid-season when it was apparent they were playing good, solid (if maybe a bit boring) football; plus they've historically been pretty competitive. SD managed to squeak into the playoffs for the 3rd straight year....they should be selling out.

But I've been over my thoughts on why Fla/SoCal (and probably Atlanta) teams should just be contracted in ALL sports. F*ck the fans down there, they don't give a crap.

Well, that might fly in another city that didn't have a major bridge collapse in the very recent past.

I think maybe people are being smart with their money. The only seats left are the expensive ones (120-160). With these seats, you are looking at almost $700 for a family of four. The cheaper more affordable seats were gone rather quickly.

Rest easy Vikings fans. You will be able to watch your team play host to the Eagles in a wild card playoff game Sunday.

The team announced this afternoon that it sold the remaining 3,100 tickets and thus avoided the team’s first local television blackout at the Metrodome since the 1997 regular-season finale. That means the Vikings’ first home playoff game since the 2000 season will be aired on Fox affiliate KMSP (Ch. 9) in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas as well as in secondary markets, including Alexandra, Redwood Falls, Austin, Mankato, Rochester, Bemidji and Mason City, Iowa.

This didn’t come without quite a bit of effort. Because only 55 percent of the Vikings’ season-ticket holders elected to purchase playoff tickets, the Vikings had 20,000 tickets to sell last Monday. That was a day after the Vikings clinched the NFC North title and a playoff berth with a victory over the New York Giants.

What made the challenge heading into today so great was that the remaining tickets weren’t exactly cheap. Tickets were priced at $80, $120 and $160.

The NFL’s blackout rules state that if a game is not sold out 72 hours before kickoff it can’t be televised in the home market, but the Vikings were given a 24-hour extension until 3:30 p.m. Friday. One extension isn’t rare, especially considering that it was a holiday on Thursday. However, when the game was not a sell out by Friday afternoon, the NFL granted another extension until 3:30 this afternoon. The NFL requires the Vikings to sell 62,000 tickets to consider a Metrodome game sold out.

Although two extensions are rare, the Vikings weren’t the only team to benefit from that this week. The Arizona Cardinals also were given until 24 hours before kickoff of today’s game against Atlanta to sell the remaining seats at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals managed to reach a sell out and avoid a blackout in that market.

What will be interesting now is to see the crowd that fills he Metrodome on Sunday. The Eagles had been encouraging their fans to “paint Minneapolis Green” and there is no doubt some folks from sports-crazed Philly probably took the advice.

Sunday’s game will mark the 115th consecutive sellout for the Vikings.
