If you had a tax holiday for a year

If you had amnesty from federal (but not state / city) income taxes for a year, what would you do with the dough?

You can click more than one answer ... but, it'd be great if you only clicked on the FIVE most likely options / highest priorities so we could try to get a decent sense for what people would do with incremental cash (in general terms).

In order:

Give to charity

Add on to / repair the existing house

Buy a different car (used SUV for wife and kids)

Pay down business debt

Build a rainy day fund / 'general investments' account

1. Support family member in need.

2. Repairs on house.

3. Pay down some debt.

4. Rainy day fund.

5. Vacation

I feel kinda like a schmuck as charity would not be close to my top five as I just have too many things that I think I would do first. Vacation sounds selfish but I would love to round up some of my family and help them go on our family vacation that we do each year.

1. We're building a new home currently, so I imagine most of it would end up there.

2. Pay off the wife's car as it is the only debt we have other than the mortgage and construction loan.

3. Sock it away in our savings.

Take a vacation

Upgrade the gadetry

Add on to/ repair the house

Pay down the mortgage

Save for retirement

I've been golfing and drinking so this is pretty much as truthful as it gets. This is pretty much the order we would do things. Ms Cid and I may very well dip into our savings to take a trip to the Galapagos next year so seeing things and using our money while we can is always a prioprity for us. I love my gadetry but really, it is something I do on a regular basis so I'd do that even with an amnesty. The other three are in order of priority, I need to keep the house I have in good shape, getting rid of the mortgage allows me to save for retirement sooner.

I only picked 3, in no particularly order:

Save for retirement

Home repairs/upgrades

Take a vacation

Too late to save for kids college...but I'm proud to say I've done a pretty damn good job on that one. No free ride, but at least half for each.

That's exactly what I said.

Only debt we have out is planned debt and very moderate car payments.

Our rainy day fund is still flush and it's been raining for a while now.

In this economy with my situation a tax free year would mean put more away into investments and savings. The past 6 months or so has really made me re-evaluate how I spend money. I still have lots of fun, but I don't like not knowing if I will have a rainy day fund the next time the chips are down.

Call me a skeptic, but if this poll is intended to determine whether or not making massive budget cuts and just letting everyone keep their taxes would result in a better fix than government taking a big role, anyone who feels that way could easily figure out how to answer in order to point the compass that way.

Just saying.

No sense looking for something with a tax break (your not paying taxes)

Ok. Sceptic.

...I was curious what people would do...nothing nefarious about it at all...

I'd put all my extra money into the liberation effort in Iraq. It is the battle front for freedom after all. At least it was until a socialist negra got in the whitehouse.

Why is it the left is the one that always brings up his race? I know the liberal talking points say to call anyone that disagrees with Obama a racist, but that is weak.

I could only come up with 5:

- build up my general investments account (already have an emergency fund set up but I'd like more $$$ in it)

- do some home improvements

- take a trip to Europe

- pay down credit card, medical bills, auto loan, etc

...though be truthful, I only picked the first and fourth out of general obligation - I'm already paying down my cc, medical, and car payments biweekly, so the progress is there. My mortgage is basically a 15-year note (which will be further accelerated once the med, cc, and car payments are gone), so that's fine.

Basically, we're in pretty good shape, so there's no pressing needs for us. More money never hurts the cause, though.
