RIP Sports Illustrated

Sports Illustrated laying off most and maybe all staff. That's the end of an era and the apparent death of a huge brand.

Remember, if you are old enough, to pre-ESPN times. Sports Illustrated was pretty much the only source for all sports-related things and attracted the best writers in the business. I remember getting the mag in the 70's. it was the only source of sports photography and the true gold standard. Now, it is washed away with the glut of everything on the internet.

Yup. I also remember when "ESPN the Magazine" tried to take the throne in the 90s. This reminds me of when Toys'r'us closed. It's something about the memories.

I got a subscription to it when I was maybe 12 or 13 for Christmas. I still remember that day my mom went to the mailbox and then came back to my room holding the swimsuit edition. "WHAT IS THIS?".

When I was in basic training I had taken a couple of sports illustrateds with me to read. One was the swimsuit edition.

Drill Sargeant going through my locker saw the and said wth, you can't have magazines and took the swimsuit edition. Left the other issue with me though.

Lock the door before you close it on your way out please, and thank you!

Certain sadness that comes with the fragmentation of attention. Used to be most people tuned in to major networks to get their news, then MTV for music, SI for sports. Now it is all over the place. Good in some ways but not in others. I feel like we are lacking a bit in shared experience. NFL coincidentally is one of the things that's still an institution and broadly popular.

They used to be the standard, but they didn't adapt with the times. They lasted a long time.

No doubt there was rough sledding ahead for them, being a print magazine.  I wonder if, in their death throws, they didnt try to adapt a little too much to the times?

My first thought too. I love that my 15yo loves beastie boys, run DMC and listens to similar with me. My 13yo listens to Korn and metallica with me

My 11 year old listens to the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, and Fleetwood Mac. She's older than all of us.

Have you told her yet that the Doobie Brothers broke up?

They're on their 50th anniversary tour!!!! It all depends on which version of the band you prefer.

The harder question is when she asks "Daddy, what's a doobie?"

By the time she figures out that they're not actually brothers she probably already know.

I think I still have a stack of SI mags buried somewhere, maybe in one of the bathroom drawers, as I used to love to skim through them as I took care of #2.  The cell phone all but replaced that need.  They definitely didn't keep up with the times.
