Azazello1313
it's an incredibly racist term. it's not that indian names and logos are racist per se...the braves, chiefs, seminoles, etc. all seem perfectly fine to me. the only two that are really racist and ought to go, IMO, are the redskins name and the cleveland indians 'chief wahoo' logo. i mean, you can't get much more blatantly racist that a term like "red" + "skin", and a goofy cartoonish racial caricature. Yukon Cornelius
This is just wrong. They will never, ever change their name. There was a big push about two years ago and Redskins still stands. I mean who does it really piss off? Most of them are either drunk, gambling, huffing paint, or any combination of the three. I just want them to change their losing ways asap. Campbell in 2008. Sweeeeett. 796648 must be an asian american F'n Yankees. 796721 quite or ill go all sherman on you and youre trailer

kcmast
I became a Packer fan because my Dad worked for Oscar Mayer. Cheering them on made me feel like I was cheering my Dad. He, on the other hand, was offended by the name and locked me in the basement.

Los Gigantes
seriously though, what if a team was called the n words? or the kikes? it wouldn't be tolerated for a second. Native Americans I know feel the same way about the name redskins. I'm a about as non-PC as you can get, but we can't ignore that it does really bother people. I think nearly everyone is offended by everything about that stinking organization. From the racist nickname, to the jackass owner, to the horrific uni's, to the city of D.C itself. Perhaps we could re-name them the Washington Offensives. Oh wait. Since they have no offense, that might not be a good idea either.. Ursa Majoris
i'm not 100% sure, but i think the musical term honky-tonk may predate, or be totally unrelated to the racial term honky. in fact, i think the musical term originated with black musicians. 797040 It would seem to be so: Such a colorful word ought to have an equally colorful history, but the origin of "honky tonk" is actually rather simple. It is almost certainly "echoic" in origin, meaning that "honky tonk" was coined to imitate the actual sound of a raucous saloon, the same way "bang" is supposed to sound like an explosion. And, in case you were wondering, "honky tonk" is not related to "honky," disparaging slang for a Caucasian person, which comes from "hunky," 19th century slang for someone of Hungarian extraction. and honky-tonk. The first printed use of this word for a cheap dance hall featuring gambling or burlesque shows, in a February 1894 Oklahoma newspaper, described a _honk-a-tonk_ "well attended by ball-heads, bachelors and leading citizens." No one is sure how the word originated. The British attribute it to America, calling _honky-tonk_ "Negro slang," while one American authority claims it is from the English dialect word _bonk_, "to idle about." Either way _honky-tonk_ is a reduplication, with _tonk_ repeating the sound of _honk_. "... It was nothing for a man to be drug out of them dead," testified a jazz musician of an early _honky-tonk_.From _Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins_ (1997) by Robert Hendrickson The honk-a-tonk last night was well attended by ball-heads, bachelors and leading citizens. (_Daily Ardmoreite_, February 24, 1894) These honkey-tonks ran wide open twenty-four hours a day and it was nothing for a man to be drug out of one of them dead. Their attendance was some of the lowest caliber women in the world and their intake was from the little, pitiful gambling games they operated, waiting for a sucker to come in. (Alan Lomax, _Mister Jelly Roll_, 1950) Sounds like fun.

Jumpin Johnies
William and Mary in Williamsburg VA is one of the oldest schools in the country, and their nickname is the Tribe... 796691 It is the second oldest in the country. It's a great school. I proposed to my fiancee up there and my mother was the Grand Marshal of the homecoming parade about a decade ago. My Grandfather was the Chairman of the Board of Visitors there and all in all over 20 of my relatives have graduated from there. I love that place and the campus is beautiful. Just ask Keggerz, he's getting married there this summer in the same chapel that my grandparents exchanged their vows.
