He was hanged because he is a murderer, not for any beliefs he might have had. However, there is one definition of martyr that closely resembles Saddam in his last desperate moments of life: to make one last attempt at stirring up the Iraqis, he does an excellent job of seeking attention by feigning and exaggerating pain and deprivation. Regardless of whether or not Saddam deserved to die, whether or not he's a matyr will not be decided by a careful weighing of the pros and cons of his life; it will be decided by looking at whether or not his execution inspires more Sunnis to take up arms agains the Shi'ites and the Americans.
