Egret
not really. the latter situation was WAY more convoluted and f'ed up. I don't believe there was ever a clear international agreement on recognized sovereignty. While that situation was more convoluted, this one isn't exactly clear cut either. It's a regional issue that we have no reason as an individual country to get involved with at this time.
I Like Soup
Ooops, I loaded up the guns and headed 95 North out of habit. I need to find a u-turn. Doesn't Russia have a crapload of oil? We could go in and "help" Georgia and accidentally take over Russia...sweet.

Clubfoothead
I hope Georgia doesn't have to pull it's troops from Iraq to deal with this. They have the 3rd largest troop presence among the coalition of the willing.

Ursa Majoris
http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/..._south_ossetia/ Interesting. Bringing Georgia into NATO would further "surround" Russia, which has historically looked with suspicion at all such moves. Georgia is the Russian Cuba, as far as the Russians are concerned. Oh and you war-mongering Northern bass turds leave the South alone. Georgia just wanted State's Rights and really, who couldn't use a slave or 10 in these busy times to help out around the house? Especially nowadays with Chavez, Menudo and the other Xicans asking for mo money.

moneymakers
Over 1,300 people are reported dead after Russian forces responded to a Georgian attack on rebels in the breakaway province of South Ossetia by mounting a full scale invasion. Not cool or funny Edited August 9, 2008 by moneymakers
Ursa Majoris
Georgia seeking a way out as fast as possible. Russian Gen. Vladimir Boldyrev claimed in televised comments Saturday that Russian troops had driven Georgian forces out of the provincial capital. Witnesses confirmed that there was no sign of Georgian soldiers in the streets. Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili proposed a cease-fire Saturday. As part of his proposal, Georgian troops were pulled out of Tskhinvali and had been ordered to stop responding to Russian shelling, said Alexander Lomaia, secretary of his Security Council. Made a big mistake, paying for it in spades.

TimC
The Russians know it is better to beat them down and they'll see your way rather than talk. It's a lesson we can all learn. The tank is stronger than the pen...unless you are using the pen to gouge your opponent's eyes out.

Perchoutofwater
Where are the lefties condemning Russia? Are they to not going to start blaming their communist forefathers of war for oil? I mean that's all this is. Russia wants control of the pipelines so they can control the oil and who gets, making Europe their lap dog. The Russians responded to a military assault on S Ossetia that killed hundreds. They've also called a halt, the pipeline untouched. Georgia made a colossal miscalculation and has paid for it. Jimmy Neutron
Me thinks this is more about the oil pipeline that runs through Georgia. BP just shut it down indefinately.
