SheikYerbuti
Wow. . . good thing we live here. . . Japan, Seeking Trim Waists, Measures Millions AMAGASAKI, Japan — Japan, a country not known for its overweight people, has undertaken one of the most ambitious campaigns ever by a nation to slim down its citizenry. Summoned by the city of Amagasaki one recent morning, Minoru Nogiri, 45, a flower shop owner, found himself lining up to have his waistline measured. With no visible paunch, he seemed to run little risk of being classified as overweight, or metabo, the preferred word in Japan these days. But because the new state-prescribed limit for male waistlines is a strict 33.5 inches, he had anxiously measured himself at home a couple of days earlier. “I’m on the border,” he said. Under a national law that came into effect two months ago, companies and local governments must now measure the waistlines of Japanese people between the ages of 40 and 74 as part of their annual checkups. That represents more than 56 million waistlines, or about 44 percent of the entire population.

DemonKnight
I dont think I've been that slim since I was ten. I have lost some weight recently and can now fit in my 36's. I was up to buying size 40's for a while there. It's amazing how much weight you lose when you quit drinking.

(1) According to the article, the regulation only applies if your waist is bigger than the limit AND you are being treated for a weight-related ailment. (2) Why the eff is the waist limit smaller for men than for women? I could see if we were talking hips, but waist?

Having spent several weeks in Tokyo, it's totally different to here. There are very few lardasses there.

Don't ask me about 4 inches directly above the beltline.

Clubfoothead
I wear 34s with a belt cuz I like my $hit baggy and 32s are too tight with my belt buckles. 32 3/8 is the measurement and yes, big guys start the bar fights. My Dad always said what was important was not who starts them but who ends them. He later explained to me that getting KOed wasn't what he meant by ending them. Squeegiebo
Yeah, I'm illegal. Now what are those skinny-ass mofos gonna do about it? Are you being treated for a weight-related health condition? If not, you would not be illegal in Japan.
Ursa Majoris
Kinda ironic they're making this fuss over weight when you consider that about 60% of Japanese smoke like chimneys.
