Sugar Magnolia
What brand of power washer should I get? Best value that will do the job. This is not for commercial use so I'm not spending $1,000. Want it for prep for painting the house and then have it around for washing decks, driveways, sidewalks, etc. What's the minimum I can spend to get a decent piece of equipment. Footballjoe
I have a gas powered Troybuilt. Not sure of the HP though. My sister has an electric power washer but it is not nearly as good. Its ok for light duty stuff around the house but it takes longer to get the job done.
Caveman_Nick
Whenever I buy a piece of equipment like this I look for one thing: what brand of engine does it have. Honda, Subaru, Kawasaki are all good. Others, post it up here. You can get a very good machine for $500 ish
darin3
This one. Consumer Reports lists it as one of the best gas-powered units and is at a decent price ($400ish retail). E2A: CN makes a good point about the engine. The Ex-Cell has a Honda motor. Edited July 13, 2009 by darin3

Jimmy Neutron
Stay away from Husky - we've broken two of them at work. The Honda motors are good, but the pumps have gone out after just a few hours of use.
Puddy
I have a Troy Built with a Honda motor. I think it's 2600 PSI and works great. My neighbor borrowed it last year and I haven't seen it since.
Footballjoe
My Troybuilt has a Briggs and Stratton. It cost me $299 about 3 years ago.

Here is the current model that is similar. This comes with the Briggs and Stratton engine, for a slight bump in price you can get one with a Honda. Furd
Power washer? A real man uses a scrub brush and a 5 gallon bucket of soapy water.
Savage Beatings
Gas Powered: Rigid RD80701 - approx. $550 Electric: Karcher K 5.93 M - approx. $280 Edit to add: the electric one might not be powerful enough for paint prep.
