rocknrobn26
"Daddy's Little Girl" is the obvious one. A quick Google got me this: I'm not sure about the one you meant. Sorry. Lot's of good suggs! Thanks a lot. The 1980 thing isn't critical I guess. It was just my idea to get a break from the HipHop and the other new fangled stuff I know they are going to play the rest of the time. My daughter will have the final say anyway. Again, thanks. rr26

rajncajn
What a wonderful world by Loius Armstrong Me and the wife danced to it at our wedding. I've always loved that tune & it puts a lump in my throat thinking about dancing to it at both my daughter's weddings.

Since RR was looking for pre 1980 I didnt include this song in my suggestion but the song Lullaby by Billy Joel would be my choice to Dance with my girls with at their wedding. Since they are girls, I probably wont have the choice and they will end up picking the song A beautiful tune Edited June 7, 2011 by whomper

Cameltosis
Its not pre 1980 so I dont know if you're interested. But Paul Simon's Father and Daughter is a beautiful song. If you leap awake in the mirror of a bad dreamAnd for a fraction of a second you can't remember where you are Just open your window and follow your memory upstream To the meadow in the mountain where we counted every falling star I believe a light that shines on you will shine on you forever And though I can't guarantee there's nothing scary hiding under your bed I'm gonna stand guard like a postcard of a Golden Retriever And never leave 'til I leave you with a sweet dream in your head [Chorus:] I'm gonna watch you shine Gonna watch you grow Gonna paint a sign So you'll always know As long as one and one is two There could never be a father Who loved his daughter more than I love you Trust your intuition It's just like goin' fishin' You cast your line and hope you get a bite But you don't need to waste your time Worryin' about the market place Try to help the human race Struggling to survive its harshest night
Furd
Does it have to be from your perspective? From your daughter's perspective, how about Raise Me Up as performed by Josh Groban? I know its not within your time parameters, but I'm not sure that it matters with that song.

Hugh B Tool
My Little Girl - My daughter and I have this one planned for our dance when the time comes. There won't be a dry eye in the house when it plays. Perfect lyrics from a Dads perspective IMHO
Codwagon
Good question. I'd prefer it from my perspective. not pre-80s and sort of country, but I dare you to not cry while listening:
Brentastic
Sticking with Stevie, was written by Stevie to celebrate the birth of his daughter. Although I'm no fan of this artist, your daughter might like it and it will probably bring a lot of wet eyes to the place: . E2A: Just found this Paul Simon song called . Never heard it before, it's pretty darn good. Released in 2002 for some children's movie. Edited June 9, 2011 by Brentastic

The Wolf
It's too recent for your needs, but Lee Ann Womack's " ." I went to a wedding a few years ago and this was the song chosen for the groom and his mother. Excellent choice. Mom passed before I got married but I KNOW she'd have wanted this song for us. rocknrobn26
Again, thanks for all the input. My fave is still "What a wonderful World". But she says that that song is overdone. She wants But it's about a newborn!!!! I sugg'd many of your choices, but she still wants the above. Should I dig my heels in or concede? When this whole thing started I told her "You make the plans...I'll write the checks". But I want this dance to be special. Does her song choice work? What say yall? tia PS: Yeah this may be trivial, but I want this to be special and something my gimpy legs/feet/knees can handle. She is just special to me. Ideally you should keep trying until you come up with a song that both of you like. If you can't agree, you'll need to pick the one SHE wants because you can't force your choice on her. You have to be magnanimous, otherwise you'll never hear the end of it.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the artist's meaning of the song. It's really about what the song means to you and how the listener interprets the lyrics. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the time what the artist intends is not what comes out or the artist is singing about something that the listener doesn't fully get. muck
Take her choice for the official "Dad / Daughter" song, but ask if she'll dance a second one with you to the song of your choice later on at the reception.
