Manning's endorsements

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has recorded another eye-popping statistic.

He earned $13 million in endorsements in 2007, a 13 percent jump from $11.5 million last year and a figure good enough to place Manning 9th among U.S. sports celebrities and first in the National Football League.

The salary figures are calculated by Sports Illustrated.

Manning, who promotes everything from shoes and sports drinks to cell phones, car dealers, hospitals and insurance companies, had been steadily rising - he earned $10.5 million in 2005.

Earlier this year, marketing specialists predicted that Manning's endorsement price would jump 10 to 20 percent if he lead the team to a Super Bowl win, which he did - allowing him to increase his appeal with the non-sports audience.

Fortune magazine says of Manning: "The reigning Super Bowl MVP boasts a stable of endorsement partners, including Sprint, MasterCard, Reebok and Gatorade."

Pro Golfer Tiger Woods is still far and away the most bankable U.S. sports star, earning $100 million in 2007. Golfer Phil Mickelson was No. 2, followed by NBA star LeBron James at $25 million.

It boggles my mind that the top two on this list are golfers and they both have a comfortable lead on LeBron.

Golfers. :D

I can understand Tiger having mass appeal with his celebrity status, but Mickelson? Is golf more popular than I'm giving it credit? Does it really get decent TV ratings?

How in the hell did Michelle Wie make $19 million this year?

Precisely what I'd like to know. She's done NOTHING at all to deserve any of these. I'd imagine after the year she had full of controversy that she'll be nowhere near this list next year.

Disagree. For some reason, golfers seem to have appeal to the masses, and notice that Wie is the only woman in the top 10. I'm guessing she isn't going anywhere.

Not so much to the masses but generally to those with more disposible income, so advertisers are more willing in invest in this target audience.

Gotta realize too that Golf has major worldwide appeal. While other major American sports are growing or trying to grow their international audience (and I think the NBA has done the best job of this), golf already has that international audience thus larger markets that these players are known in thus greater leverage for these players to negotiate higher endorsement fees.

Good point. The PGA is as international as it gets. And the point earlier about golf being marketed to people with dispoable income is a good one as well. It says a lot about golf's appeal that Michelle Wie is on this list.
