Bush, Leinart projected in top two

By Mel Kiper Jr.

Here's my first-round projection for the 2006 NFL draft. I put this list together by taking a look at the general area where each player should go, then placing the player on a team where he filled one of that particular team's top three needs.

In this projection, there are 17 underclassmen in the first round, with Reggie Bush and Vince Young leading the way as the first and third picks of the draft. This is my first projection, but it won't be my last of this season. I will submit another first-round projection after the Senior Bowl, followed by one after the NFL Combine.

I think Philly, NE, Carolina, Jax and Pittsburgh will be hard pressed to not consider White or Maroney at their picks.

I'd be shocked if Reid takes anything other than a lineman in the 1st. Its just not his style.

That said I'd be happy if he did get an everydown back.

Yeah, I know. But can you imagine putting LenDale White back there with Westbrook? It would be a great pick. Philly would finally be able to have a running game between the tackles. And let's be honest, Westbrook is not an everydown back that can survive a full NFL season. And they could finally give up on Buckhalter.

Totally disagree here. Vernon Davis probably deserves top-billing, but Byrd and others over Marcedes Lewis? :D

Titans will take Vince Young at 1.3 if they dont trade down AND he is there. Other observations: Demeco Ryans is the best Defensive player in this draft. He will be a better player than Hawk at the next level. Jay Cutler will be the best pro QB in this draft. Debrickashaw Ferguson is overated and will be serviceable but not really any better OT than can be had in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I'd give the nod to Pope over Lewis since he's bigger and a better blocker. Even though the teams may take Lewis hoping for another Gates\"basketball player" type with good hands, I think Pope could be a beast in the red zone. It all depends on if they want a more well-rounded TE or someone with potentially greater athleticism who could stretch the field.

I posted in a thread a week or to ago, when the Packer Homers were discussing their 1st round draft pick, and it appears MK agrees with me about Mario Williams-trust me Packer Nation, KGB would pay this kid himself to play the other DE, he's going to be an excellent player, and is much more ahead of Peppers at this time in their careers. I'd love to see him fall to Carolina-aint gonna happen.

The Panthers are going to resign McRee, so the DT is set. Big Kid (Jenkins) will be back next year as well-hopefully his bad fortunes have come to an end(man the D will be a force with him back). So, the Panthers will go offense in the draft, but I'm not so sure about a TE though, but we shall see in April. I'd like to see another possesion TE brought in via Wesley Walls, as Mangum and Gaines are never going to be Stud TE's. I must confess to not knowing about the Lad from ND-possesion or blocking. Still think TJ Williams from NC State will be the steal at TE in the draft.

OK, didn't see enough of Pope this season... but putting Lewis under Byrd is straight-up silly.

Dallas will take one of these two:

Winston Justice, OT, USC

Marcus McNeill, OT Auburn

One other IF he's still on the board they will consider.

Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt

Dallas will be looking to fix the O-line and get some youth at QB & WR.

On defense they will look to add a LB with Dat's career in question and they still need to get a reliable free saftey.

Why does Kiper have the Rams taking a tight end? They need help on defense.

A tight end for the Bears was a reasonable pick before they got Steve Smithed last Sunday. I think da' Bears need to take the best DB available.
