kpholmes
From NFL.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2006) -- Not even the co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee is immune from punishment for criticizing an official. Titans coach Jeff Fisher was fined $12,500 for criticizing an official Nov. 12 after a 27-26 loss to Baltimore. After the game, Fisher said it was a "bad call by the umpire" that denied the Titans' recovery of a fumble in the third quarter. The Titans had stripped Mike Anderson of the ball while he was still upright. Titans defensive tackle Robaire Smith came out of a pile with the ball, but officials ruled Anderson been down by contact. Fisher challenged and lost a timeout when referee Jeff Triplette upheld the ruling, saying there was a fumble but "no clear recovery." Fisher said after the game the replay showed the call was wrong. "I hope they hear me in New York because that was field position, and we lost by a point," Fisher said Nov. 12. "The challenge process was correct as far as replay goes, but I should not have been forced to challenge that play." After watching the replays on ESPN and NFL Network, Fisher is clearly right here, and the offials were clearly wrong, a fine here is amazing. I've been hearing and seeing a lot about bad officiating this year... Bad officiating in general, as well as challenges. There have been several instances in the past few weeks where the commentators have questioned the use of intant replay if officials aren't going to do anything with it... Whats the deal here? Is it getting worse or staying the same? Beause it sure isn't getting better... Edited November 16, 2006 by kpholmes
BeeR
Say What Willis? w/a fine for sayin an ump made a bad call, right or wrong? Will they start getting fined for yelling at the refs during games too? :lame:
spain
The refs completely blew that call. It was a horrible call, no question about it at all. What was Fisher supposed to say?
Big Score 1
Right now on NFL Network Total Access The VP of Officiating, Pereira, is doing the Texas Two Step around the blown call. Funny stuff!
FishFreak
The refs in general have sucked this year, in years past and seems to be getting worse. With all the things the NFL tries to do to improve the league, it seems they just can't get good, consistent officiating. They can cut down on celebrations that are cool and fun to watch but can't improve the NFL's greatest weakness officiating? Let's get those Priorites in order people! Rockerbraves
I've proposed this to the league, but the NFL has yet to respond. Proposed they have someone call me at the house tell me what channel to watch. Let me review the play. Tell me what we are reviewing without giving me the official ruling on the field. I'll give them my honest opinion which is 100% correct. Seems pretty easy, doesn't it?
Sox
It's strange.Replay and the challenge process are supposed to reduce the amount of bad calls. But the officials seem to get worse every year.

Then fining a coach becuase he called them on it? I guess I didn't realize officials were to be show great respect... Hard to respect them when they blow so many games. Yeah, but the fine is because he told the media as much. He's supposed to call Mike Pereira and whine to him about it.

H8tank
The reason they had to rule it down by contact is becuase the whistle blew. If they had not blown the early whistle then it would have been a fumble. The 'Down By Contact' doesn't look right when you see the replay, but the refs were playing by the new rule instituted this year. Don't like the rule? By an NFL team and you can have a vote to change it.

I think Fisher's point is that there are too many calls that are just flat out wrong that coaches get put into a bad position with having to challenge. If the challenges could be contained to mainly plays where the ref called it wrong because he had a tough time seeing something from his angle, the system would be working. Now it's being used just to correct horrid officiating mistakes.
Def.
Problem is the officiating crews all "work" somewhere else. IMO it's time that the ref's become full-time NFL employees so the bar can be raised on the officiating standard.
Big Score 1
Pereira did admit that it was a fumble, but then quickly went on to how the replay never showed who recovered the ball in the scrum. Eisen immediately called him on that too. He pointed out that on every fumble that involved a scrum, whoever came out of the pile with the ball, that was the team the Refs gave possession to. So Eisen asked Pereira why would the replay not showing who got the ball in that particular scrum, be any more relevant to the hundreds of other scrums around fumbles, throughout the year. Pereira conceded that was a good point & changed the subject.

They never blew the whistle and the onfield officials did NOT claim that the play had been blown dead. The official said that they couldnt tell that Tennessee actually recovered the ball, even though after getting to the bottom of the pile, a Titan clearly had the ball. H8tank
I didn't see the play, (who watches the titties play? ) and I am not defending it. And, I agree the officiating is BAD, the mystery calls for interferance, all of them, bad bad bad.

CowboysDiehard
The refs completely blew that call. It was a horrible call, no question about it at all. What was Fisher supposed to say? What's sad about is that today, on NFL network, they had the head of officiating (can't think of his name) on there explaining why it was the RIGHT call to make. I won't even try to repeat what he said, because it made no sense whatsoever to me. I'm not even sure he believed what he was saying, but he had to toe the company line. Yes, it was lame indeed. kpholmes
This just in... Art Shell gets the same fine for the same reason... He says the refs "screwed" the Raiders on a call. Are they just fining anyone who stands up to them now? Rediculous. Edited November 17, 2006 by kpholmes
Savage Beatings
Curious... is there any kind of Coaches Association, like the Players' Association that would stand up for the rights of the Coaches in cases like this? Or are they just considered Management, and so fall under the umbrella of the Owners?
