Pirate lookin' at 40
So does anyone else ever find themselves pulling against their favorite team? I am a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, I even named my son Dallas. If I win my fantasy game this week, I play for a championship next week. I lost the championship game 2 years ago and that is as close as I have gotten to winning this league. The problem, is that my opponent has Tony Romo, Austin Myles and Jason Witten. So, if these guys do well, I may be in trouble. The other thing is that I don't believe Dallas is going anywhere this year and I want a new coach anyway. Even if they make the playoffs, they are not going on the road and beating the Saints or Vikings. Anyone else ever pull for their fantasy team over their NFL team? Of course, I'd love it if Dallas won with 3 rushing TD's and maybe a defensive score.
montster
i love the cowboys. despite the head coach and owner, i want them to win every game. but if i'm playing against miles austin and he scores, i'm just a little less excited than i would be otherwise, and i hate that. muck
Menudo really "pulls" for the Steelers. Pretty much everyone else around here just roots for this team or that.
McBoog
I learned early in this game, probably my second season or so (well over a decade ago) that the best thing to do is submit your line-up and not worry about who your opponent is playing. I don't even look or care until after the games are over, unless maybe if I'm in the championship and there is serious cash on the line. Just like the Austin scenario above, I don't want to diminish the thrill of my favorite team's success on Sunday. Now if you have a player that you started on you FF team that is also on your favorite team and you start them, you face the ups of their scores and the downs of the, "Why didn't they run LT from the 1 instead of a play action pass to Gates????" I also try to avoid drafting players from teams I hate (like the Raiders). I hate having to root for a guy on a team I hate! Fortunately, that hasn't been a big problem for me the last few years
Ramhock
I'll be the first honest one. Been playing since '84. Somewhere the ff action took over, don't know where exactly. Not happy about it. Not something I can control. I still root for the Rams but it is not like on my 11th birthday, when they were in Minnesota for a playoff game in '69 & Billy Truax dropped a look-in pass on 4th & 5 on the Vikes 10 yard line, down by 4 points with < 2:00 remaining. I was so upset, I did not eat any of my own birthday cake. I miss that passion but it has been replaced. I had NFL fantasy playoff action when Dyson was stopped at the one. If he scored I would have won 1st place & some $. When he caught the ball, I became confused as to how to react for those split seconds. That is truly sad but you have no control over these things. cdrudge
Favorite team first, fantasy team second. There's nothing wrong for rooting for both, but being a fan always trumps fantasy in my books.

Mello
The Cowboys come way before FF. Now in a championship game, depending on the league and how much money/pride was on the line and how much the Cowboys need the win, that could become a little blurred, but not much. If the choice is between the Cowboys winning or my FF team winning, I'll take the Cowboys almost all the time. I will admit, I try to avoid taking Cowboys' players as much as possible. I'm not so strict that I wouldn't take one if they were on the board way past their ADP and I thought that ADP matched their value, but in general, I'd rather use FF as way to get into other games in the NFL and If the Cowboys lose, I can still get some satisfaction out of the weekend if my FF team wins. rajncajn
Always Saints before fantasy. In fact, I usually don't check fantasy scores while the game is on. If Brees scores 5 TDs & costs me a fantasy championship, even in the most meaningless of games, I would still be no less happy about it. CaptainHook
Colts first. Then fantasy a distant second. I can win all my fantasy games, and be in a bad mood if the Colts lose. Conversely, if the Colts win, and I lose all my fantasy games, I'm still ok.
Cunning Runt
I learned early in this game, probably my second season or so (well over a decade ago) that the best thing to do is submit your line-up and not worry about who your opponent is playing. I don't even look or care until after the games are over, unless maybe if I'm in the championship and there is serious cash on the line. This. I have a general idea who my opponent has but only 'cause I've looked at rosters throughout the year. Mid-season, I had no idea who my opponent had playing and didn't care. I couldn't control anything other than my own team so I set my lineup and looked at the results later. Now... having said that, I would MUCH rather that one of my fantasy teams won a championship, or heck... even a single game - than the Colts - my favorite team. And if it ever became an issue where I had to root against players on the Colts playing well in order for my fantasy team to win, that's what I'm gonna do. In a perfect world, the Colts would still win but the players I'm rooting against didn't contribute to that win.
Chief Dick
Chiefs-no question. I just play FF at this point so I can come here and hang out with all you wankers.

STL Fan
Always the Rams first, but if someone is going to score against us, it might as well be my guy, right?
matt770
I'm in a bad spot this week, playing the #1 seed in the playoffs and need hugh numbers from every position to have any chance of winning. My QBs were Palmer and VY and I just picked up Jason Campbell. Palmer has not been doing much, and Young is banged up. Looks like my season comes down to Campbell having a big game against my G-men. That being said, since I root for the Lions, I don't have the dilemma posed by the OP.

Menudo
Not even close for me. I'm in my fantasy playoffs this week, and the Steelers are playing a game that likely won't do much for them in the end. I would trade a fantasy playoff loss for a Steelers win on Sunday. Fantasy football will NEVER interfere with my Steeler fandom. Edited December 17, 2009 by Menudo

The Waterboy
Just curious, but has anyone in this situation ever laid a wager on their home team as kind of a hedge? Or maybe against a player (I dont know, cant you do this stuff on bodog or wsex?) Then you can just say - who cares and pull for your team just for the sport of it. chester
Always Pack first. Of course I would never complain if they won 45-42 and my FF QB had 6 TDs against us. Though I've often wondered how I'd feel if it was for big money. I've never had more than $100 or so ride on one game.

Ha! I am in the exact same situation. QBs are Palmer and Young, picked up Campbell and starting him against Big Blue. Only difference is I'm the #3 going against the #2. I want a Giants win, but I want Campbell to put up big numbers(and Manningham to do nothing) along the way. I think a bigger issue for me is playing in multiple leagues. When I have a guy starting in my local but I'm playing against him in Ladder, that sucks. This really becomes an issue on Monday night when I'm starting AJ and playing against, say, Schaub. The ridiculous statistical outcomes that I start hoping for are absurd.
