So you are ONE HUNDRED PERCENT color-blind?  Don't get the LEAST BIT NERVOUS in the ghetto?

Come on.  You're an accomplished poker player, and you're gonna sit there and say that Asians are typically aggressive poker players?

Again, it's all about the connotation of the word.  When someone's dubbed a "racist", you automatically think of the KKK or someone that "hates" a specific race.  Take a step back.  Take two even.  Think a bit out of the box and realize that humans are inherently going to feel more comfortable in certain situations - and often times they have to do with race.  It's unfortunate, but it's just the way it is.

Darin I'm not comfortable walking around any ghetto. Whether the community is black, white, yellow, or green. That's a demographic issue, not a racism issue. Poor people are desperate and do what they need to do to get by I guess.

Would I be more comfortable walking around a white ghetto? Probably. However that is due to the fact that I am white and maybe viewed as an easy mark. The same thing goes the other way though. A black man will be more comfortable walking around a black ghetto than a white trailer park for the same reason.

50/50 split right now. We should have a racist v non-racist league this year :D

The Racist division can only draft players of their own race.

The Non-Racist division can draft any player.

I think I love you, but what am I so afraid of?... set it up :D

That would be great. Who do you think would win? Would I be considered a racist if I thought the "all black' team would win?

I'll bite on this one. So black people don't tip? This is a fact?

the majority don't- YES 100% fact- probably goes back to "reparations" or something- my forefathers enslaved theri forefathers so they aren't giving me anything....

and I have never not ever one single time been stiffed by a white customer in the 3 months or so I've been delivering. If a balck guy gives me $2 I almost fall off he step from shock

rac·ism

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability AND that a particular race is superior to others.

2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Sigh.

I think I love you, but what am I so afraid of? obviously subscribes to definition #1.  That's fine.  But y'all have to realize that definition #2 can be on many levels, and therefore, could peg someone a "racist" while not being in the KKK or taking the very negatively-connotated version of "racist".

Definition 1 is only valid if the emphasis is placed on the AND. To say that race doesn't account for differences is simply not true.

Thats interesting. I worked at a beach club, when I was in college during the summer. I found no difference in tipping between white/black. Whatever, I'll let it go.

I do not discriminate against people based on race, so I voted "no."

Do I have prejudices?  Sure, everyone does.  But I make a conscious effort to overcome mine when they impact any particular action or decision I make.

Ditto for me. It doesn't matter what color people are, there are jerks everywhere.

Also, the assumption that people of color don't tip is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. In college i used to tend bar at a busy place with a mixed ethnicity. The worst tippers by % were the more well off white people. Your tip almost always was a direct result of service, not the color of thier skin.

If you treat people with respect, more often than not you'll get the same in return. Its not the skin, its whats underneath that makes people the way they are.

Do you draft 5 or 12? 12 good ones would be tough! White men still can't jump...

Good question.

I get nervous around people that look threatening. Any people. More so if I am with my wife, because then I have to go from potential self preservation mode to self-sacrificial, protective mode.

This is the same if they are white, asian, latino, or black.

OK, but what's the likelihood that said "threatening person" is white vs. non-white?

Don't worry, I agree with you both for the most part.

I have been in both situations.

The fact is that where I live there are much more dangerous black neighborhoods than white neighborhoods. The frequency of opportunity to get into one type of bad situation versus another is not my fault and I choose not to have it reflect on me.

I can say that in Dorchester, MA, there are 3 locations generally recognized as the 'bad parts'. Ashmont, Fields Corner, and Savin Hill. Savin Hill might not be so bad any more, but it was a place that if you weren't a mick your rear got kicked. Ashmont was territorially black. Fields Corner was just a bad place. I had to go to fields corner for karate every week, and it was a scary place. I never went up to Savin Hill, because nobody is goign to mistake me for an Irishman, and I never went to Ashmont because nobody was going to mistake me for a black guy.

Does that make me racist, or just smart?

I've been delivering pizza for the past few months a few nights a week for extra cash and some of the neighborhoods I work in are less than stellar to be polite-I get all kinds from really nice homes to ghetto dumps...

I'll say this- I have never- NOT ONCE- been stiffed on a tip by a white customer- the blacks that I deliver to tip maybe 30% of the time- many even wait for their .12 cents change, while other say "keep the change" when its like .22 cents

Not that this alone has anything to do with my personal feelings towards any one particular race- but it's things like this that make you go hmmmmm :D

But how much of this is attirbutable to race, and how much to culture? If black people don't tip, it's not because of genetics but because of how they were raised. And for that matter how YOU were raised: tipping is mandatory according to you, and for disclosure's sake that's how I was raised as well. But that doesn't mean it's any better or more right than their decision to NOT tip.

well....that's going all the way over to cultural relativism, and i don't agree with that one bit. i don't mind saying, objectively, that it's pretty lousy not to tip your server in a restaurant. but at the same time, associating tipping habits with skin color is absurd.
