Good luck. Dangerous stuff, but the hospital is the place to be. I'm guessing they will probably keep you in the hospital for two weeks. Could be a lot of things that caused it from hereditary things (my mom is what they call Factor V positive so she's predisposed) to prolonged sitting to medication. I would bet it isn't that uncommon for Chargerz to see it in his patients.

Best of vibes, no fun and you are going to have to monitor this once your recovery is complete. If they put you on Coumadin, let me know and I'll guard you in the next Tailgate game of pick-up. I like to throw elbows and you'll have to respect that from here on out. Should give me some room for my jump shot.

Feel better soon.

Hereditary blood disease is a possibility.

Have you had trauma to the leg recently?

Taken any flights? Sat in car on long trip?

All common reasons for developing clots.

You will typically be on blood thinner for minimum 6 months but most likely it will be longer.

It's not my style to ask this, but I'm gonna anyway. I could use some positive mojo/prayers.

About a month ago I posted that I had said a prayer and it was answered. I'm saying some more today.

I noticed my leg was swollen after work today so I went to the ER. It turns out I have a blood clot in my leg and another in my lung - potentially fatal stuff. I think the lung one may have been what my original prayers were about a while back.

So now I'm at the hospital and will be for 4-5 days at least while they have me on a blood thinner hooked up to all sorts of stuff.

The real question though is why, at 45, and pretty healthy, did I get these clots. They won't know until I'm off the blood thinning medicine in about 6 months when they can do some more bloodwork.

I won't lie. I'm scared. But I'm in the right place (hospital). Hopefully it all turns out ok.

Thanks in advance.

I can tell you that the same thing happened to a co-worker. He had a blood clot in his leg. He was much more concerned than his doctor seemed to be. (according to him)

It's a very good thing that the doctors know that the clots are there.

Good luck and prayers sent.

Heartfelt prayers already sent. As for the why's on a spiritual level, we can never know, or at least rarely. Thankfully, you had symptoms. Some people don't, and that is when these things can end badly, but you are getting treatment. Get well soon.

Thanks everyone. Your kind words have lifted my spirits for ure.

This has been a real eye-opener. They did a procedure called a venogram and TPA on my leg today which is supposed to break the clot righy away. But because of the medicine, I'm on 100% bedrest (so if I've got to go poo, it's in a pan). They've got me in ICU.

I just want this to be over, but it sounds like I'll be in the hospital 3-4 more days at least.

I'm kind of blown away by all that's happened in shuch a short period of time but like I said, your kind words have truly lifted me.

Thanks!!

Prayers sent. My wife had a clot in her leg a few years ago. They never did quite figure out why. She went to the hospital for immediate care . After that she was on Coumadin for 1 year and had no issues. after a year they stopped the Coumadin and she has been fine ever since. I tell you this to encourage you and hope for the same results. Like we said in the original thread. prayers go to many places. Now they go to the docs treating you and to you to get back on your feet. Good luck bro

  • 3 weeks later...

Just thought I'd share this follow up info as it stands now.

I did have a clot, and from the looks of it, had one previously in my leg, but showed no outward symptom and the previous one caused a portion of my femoral veinto become occluded, which basically means it's out of commission.

So they need to find out what's going on with my blood that caused not one, but two clotting events - both "unprovoked". So I went to a hematologist Wednesday of this week and they drew a bunch of blood. The results aren't back yet but they seem pretty sure they're going to find some abnormality that may well necessitate me to be on blood thinners for life (coumadin). The most common abnormality is something called Leiden V Factor. Supposedly approx. 1 out of 20 people have this, but most never have a clotting incident so they don't know they have it.

I'm going to go to the Cleveland Clinic to have a specialist look at the vein issue itself in my leg to evaluate the potential hazards/complications of having that occulded vein and what I need to do going forward to ensure I avoid these complications.

This was and is a big time life changing event for me and I'm still kind of struggling with it all. It's been a lot to take in over a short period of time. I'm going to continue following doctor's orders and do everything I possibly can to minimize any negative impact this has on my life.

Anyway, that's it. That's kind of the cliffnotes version.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and well-wishes. They were and are very nice to read and hear and definitely lifted my spirits.
