BigTen
For the Killer... Wednesday, March 08, 2006 Lions aren't likely to go on free agency spending spree Even if the CBA is extended tonight or some point in the near future, after looking at the numbers and who the Lions need to sign, it doesn't appear they're going to be major players in the free agency market. President Matt Millen has said all along that the priority is getting their own targeted free agents back. Jeff Backus and the four restricted free agents have been tendered so they'll be back. However, there are several other guys the Lions also want back: Kalimba Edwards, Jared DeVries, Kyle Kosier, Shawn Bryson, Vernon Fox and Eddie Drummond among them. Here are some of the positions the Lions need to address in free agency: A veteran middle linebacker (to replace Earl Holmes, not necessarily as a starter, but for depth), a backup quarterback, a veteran receiver and a couple of offensive linemen. I don't see the Lions spending a lot of dough on an offensive guard, partly because the market is extremely thin there. They'll bring in somebody who will compete with Kosier and DeMulling for the job. I don't see them spending big for a backup quarterback either -- somebody in the Jon Kitna range makes sense. Drew Brees is out of the picture. One area where the Lions might spend more money than normal is at receiver, but only because Isaac Bruce is available. If the Lions can afford him, he makes perfect sense because of his work ethic, experience and knowledge of Mike Martz's offense. It would be a great help to that young receiving corps to have a guy like Bruce they can lean on and learn from. The Lions are in decent cap shape but, considering everything they have to do, they aren't in a position to make a bunch of top-dollar acquisitions. And they won't

loyalboyd
If you think about it. The greats far as WR all had great mentors at one time or another. Player = Mentor Terrell Owen = Jerry Rice Steve Smith = Muhsinan Muhimahad (very bad spelling) Torry Holt = Issac Bruce Lee Evans (shown flashes) = Eric Moulds Larry Fitzgerld = Anaquan Boldin etc. Just food for thought. Just think about.... They learn the tricks of the NFL allittle quicker.
Big Score 1
If Martz is determined to go with Harrington, then it can't hurt having a vet like Bruce around the young Lions WR's.

The answer? Put the money into Brees rather than Bruce, put Harrington on the bench, and then you won't need a new WR. Those 3 will be great with Brees throwing to them. The Lions need a new offensive system (hence Martz) and they need to start building from the trenches. IMO Edited to add: Plus Brees is coming off shoulder surgery. They are wasting raw talent because those guys have no idea how to play WR in the pros beyond their natural talent. They are just plain sloppy. Cut Roger, add Bruce and there you go. A good young WR (see Chad Johnson) doesn't necessarily need anyone to mentor him before he can become all-world. PS - Anquan Boldin was drafted ONE year before Fitz ... hard to call that a serious mentorship, imo.

Lee Evans has a long way to go to reach "great" status. Looks like with all the WRs and no stud QB......there's gonna be alot of reverses and end arounds! :doah:
