Jared Allen trade rumors

I'm just wondering if the Vikings have actually offered the contract. If they have, the Chiefs can automatically "not match", and receive a first this year and the Vikes 1st next year. I believe KC would jump on that.

My guess is that the Vikes have offered the first and third, while the Chiefs want the 1st and 2nd this year. In this case the Vikings would be smart to settle compensation BEFORE tendering the contract.

I think your right, they are trying to get something done and the compensation is holding it up. They are both waiting to see who blinks, but my guess is that it will go right up to draft time. KC probably wants picks in this years draft and not in 2009 and or 2010 so it get done right before the draft.

Here's something that's flying around the 'net... From PFT

Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2008, 8:47 a.m.

We received a text message and a phone call late Saturday/early Sunday from a league source who shared with us a curious development regarding the Minnesota Vikings’ ongoing efforts to acquire Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen.

Per the source, the Vikings are “likely” to sign Allen to an offer sheet after next weekend’s draft, if a “fair” trade can’t be worked out before then.

The move meshes with the idea that came us to like an acorn to a blind squirrel on Saturday. With the Chiefs reportedly wanting a first-round pick and a second-round pick for Allen, why not simply nab Allen with a poison-pilled offer sheet and foist on the Chiefs the Vikings’ first-round picks in 2009 and 2010?

The fact that the Vikes apparenty plan to pursue this tactic is a strong indication that Allen’s visit to the Twin Cities has resulted in an agreement between the player and the Purple regarding the money that will be paid to the NFL’s sack leader in 2008.

But there’s a wild card in this scenario. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly interested in Allen, and could be squeezed into besting the Vikings’ pre-draft trade offer if the Bucs know that Allen would otherwise be poised to sign a post-draft offer sheet in Minnesota.

Then again, if Allen has made up his mind that he wants to play in the land of 10,000 lakes (but hopefully not 0.10 percent BAC), the Bucs will be out of the picture, and the question will be whether the Vikings get him before the draft, or after it.

A couple of readers have asked us whether the Vikings could sign Allen to an offer sheet right now, since it’s less than seven days before the first day of the draft. But even though a team with a franchise player has up to seven days to decide whether to match an offer sheet that he signs, the team can also decide before the seven days expire to not match it. In this case, doing so would give the Chiefs the Vikings’ first-round picks in 2008 and 2009.

And since the Chiefs would surely prefer to get extra draft picks for Allen right now (especially since G.M. Carl Peterson might not be around to use picks in 2009 and/or 2010), it’ll be critical for the Vikings to dust off the poison pill, if they want to be sure to acquire Allen. Otherwise, the Vikes will have merely negotiated on the Chiefs’ behalf Allen’s long-term contract to stay in Kansas City.

1. A possible Jared Allen trade: The Kansas City Chiefs may let Allen, the league's leading sacker, slip out of town. On Thursday the Chiefs confirmed they are listening to offers for their franchise defensive end. Allen had a great visit to Minnesota over the weekend. Both sides talked parameters of a contract, but no deal was struck. Allen's plan is to visit Tampa Bay soon. The Chiefs would receive two first-round picks -- the price of a franchise player -- if they let Allen sign with either team.

That the Chiefs have acknowledged trade discussions suggests they might take less than two first-round picks. Allen has made it clear he won't sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs. If that's the case, the Chiefs would have to find a replacement, and now would be the time. Chris Long of Virginia or Vernon Gholston of Ohio State should be available at No. 2. Let's say the Chiefs trade Allen to the Vikings for first- and third-round picks or a first- and a second-rounder. Other than Jake Long, the top offensive linemen are expected to go between the No. 12 and No. 18 picks. Armed with the Vikings' pick at No. 17 and several others, the Chiefs could move up and get the left tackle of their liking.

The Vikings have a better chance than the Bucs of making a trade with the Chiefs because the Bucs have only five picks. From a football standpoint, it would be interesting to see Allen in a Vikings uniform. The Vikings have Kevin Williams and Pat Williams at defensive tackle occupying three blockers. Allen would be a nightmare for teams in the NFC North to block.

The offer sheet conundrum

April 21st, 2008 – 2:42 PM by Kevin Seifert Media outlets from around the country continue to suggest the Vikings would be better off waiting until after this weekend’s draft to acquire DE Jared Allen from Kansas City. We are at a loss to understand why this has suddenly become the fashionable line of thinking.

By most accounts, the Vikings could have Allen today if they send Kansas City their first- and second-round picks in this weekend’s draft. That’s a premium price, one they might be able to lower into a first-and-third package by the end of this week. (As we’ve previously reported, the Vikings are close to an agreement with Allen’s agent on a multi-year contract extension.)

As the suggestion goes, the Vikings would sign Allen after the draft to a formal offer sheet for franchise players. The Chiefs would have the option to match, but they almost certainly would pass and accept the mandatory compensation according to NFL rules: The Vikings’ next two first-round draft picks, in 2009 and 2010.

True, the Vikings would enter the 2008 season with Allen plus a full draft class, including the No. 17 overall pick. But unless we’re missing something, this strategy seems to be a classic mortgage of the future in order to win now.

It’s one thing to run around the free agent market, snapping up your Bernard Berrians and Madieu Williamses with Zygi Wilf’s limitless ATM card. It’s another to bet that one player, no matter how spectacular, is worth two future first-round picks.

And that’s essentially what it would be: A futures bet. It’s saying that Allen gives them a better chance of winning the Super Bowl than would two other players selected in future first rounds.

An improved record in 2008 and 2009 would push those picks lower in the respective rounds. But suffice it to say, the Vikings would need exceptionally strong records in both of those seasons to make those first-round picks equal in value to, say, a first- and third-round pick in 2008.

Ultimately, the Vikings would have to decide if Allen and a full 2008 draft class would make them a Super Bowl favorite this season. Because if they don’t, the Vikings’ ability to continue building in the near future would be limited significantly.

It’s not known whether the Vikings actually prefer the offer sheet route. But they have to be thrilled that this idea is circulating.

It could make the Chiefs nervous.

Why? Kansas City’s hope in trading Allen is to infuse youth at multiple positions in the 2008 draft. The Chiefs were 4-12 last season, and the futures of team president Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards are far from certain. Neither Peterson nor Edwards want to wait until 2010 to finish collecting their return for Allen. Will they even be employed at that point?

All in all, we’re guessing Peterson/Edwards would prefer a couple of 2008 picks – even if it’s a first and third – than two future first rounders.

Just a thought to consider as the week progresses. We’re still awaiting word on whether Allen will visit Tampa Bay. This thing could be resolved later today, later this week, next week or never. (We know, that narrows things down.)

As always, we will update you whenever it’s warranted. (And, sometimes when it’s not.)

I could see them sticking it to Carl this way, and he's stupid enough to screw it up.

Mortgage of the future? The guy is still young. Two probably mid to low 1st round picks for a 4 year proven player doesn't seem like mortaging the future to me.

What was the fallout from the Joey Galloway for draft picks trade again?

I'm fairly certain that those draft picks ended up being hugh.

2 firsts. (2000 and 2001). Seattle took SA and Koren Robinson with those picks.

The Vikings have reportedly increased their offer to the Chiefs for franchise player Jared Allen.

Minnesota allegedly now has its first-round and third-round picks this year and a 2009 second-rounder on the table. The Vikes were previously offering only their 2008 first- and third-rounders. Assuming a contract can be agreed upon, Kansas City seems likely to take them up on the new proposal.

I think the chiefs have to make this move...

A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd is very close to two 1st rounders if those 1st rounders are lower picks. I'd do either.

Plus consider that if the Chiefs don't accept the deal, and wait until the Vikes sign an offer sheet AFTER their 1st pick on Saturday, then KC would have just screwed themselves out of an immediate reward for Allen. I almost hope that the latter happens (although I would also LOVE to just know right now that Allen is a Viking).

Yes and most agree the Chiefs need players that start now.

That seems like alot, but I guess the 3rd rounder this year was basically a freebie from Denver. I guess You'd have to do that deal as need at DE is pretty desperate and Allen guarantees them a very good player at that spot compared to what you'd get at 17.

I better go buy a JA Chiefs jersey tonight before the price goes up

Prices usually go a lot down on spamshirts when that player is no longer on the team (for reasons other than retirement) as the stores are reducing inventory and those are perceived as "damaged goods".

How'd I know you'd be the one to respond. Yeah, I figured that would be the response, not that I necessarily agree though. If theres only a certain # of something made then that should make the price go up, but they do go down, but they will also become harder to find as well.

Eagles Inquired About Allen

It's being reported that the Eagles discussed an offer with the Chiefs that would send picks and DB Lito Sheppard to Kansas City for disgruntled DE Jared Allen.

It seems the Eagles have gone a different way this year in the offseason, acting way more aggressive than they have in the past. Allen is a young, ultra-talented player, but also has some off-field issues, which isn't what Eagles HC Andy Reid goes for. If Allen stays out of trouble, he is a DL1 wherever he goes. The Vikings are currently the frontrunners for Allen's services.
