Caveman_Nick
"Five Foods" can be interpreted as 5 recipies or 5 ingredients....interesting because Lasagna and steak are very different in that respect but both being used as foods here. In the spirit of the recipe... Spinach salad. A mix I make from whole grain, ground beef/buffalo/turkey, egg whites, beans, tomatoes, onions, shredded carrots, peppers. King crab legs guacamole fruit salad Somehow I missed the "Nutritional Considerations Aside" That list: Pizza. If I have to narrow that down, give me a crispy thin crust pizza with hamburg, bacon and onion. Chicken Wings. I prefer mine on the spicy side, but I will eat them in their various forms. King Crab legs. Lots of butter. Mmmmmm Ribs McDonalds Breakfast. If I have to narrow.....I guess I'll take the Value Mean #2. Honorable mention to Veal Parm and Nachos. Gopher
That's tough... Going with the "throw all nutritional concerns out the window" theme.... Pepperoni pizza. Not deep dish, or thin crust either. Something in between. If I had to choose a specific kind, it would be a place called Tomacelli's in Sioux Falls, SD of all places. Some pizza you eat til you're full. Others you eat until it's gone (or there's none left in sight), not even realizing when/if you're full. That place is my favorite of all time... back in the day, I could cruise through their large no problem, and think about ordering again. Taco John's softshell beef tacos. What's funny is a lot of people don't even care for them. Some even say Taco Bell is better. My brothers and I were raised on those things. I can honestly say that there is not a single food in the world that I crave more than those... I can't even explain it. I only eat them once or twice a year, if I'm lucky, which might contribute to the addiction. I've even thought of driving to Reno (their closest location to CA) to pick some up, and that's a good 5+ hour drive from my house. My mom's lasagna. Some people say "that's restaurant quality", when referring to a very good home-cooked meal, as though it's a compliment. I'd probably think about punching them in the face if they said that about her lasagna (which I can pretty much duplicate myself, after several years of practice). It blows any restaurant lasagna, or any other lasagna I've ever tried, out of the water. Not even close. What's funny is that this dish may be my favorite meal of all-time (the two above I crave more, but only because I rarely eat them), but I haven't even bothered ordering lasagna from a restaurant in probably 20 years. Any time I ever used to, I would be extremely disappointed... nothing comes close to my mom's, and I'll put it up against anybody else's lasagna (or their mother's, for that matter) as well... and win easily. Black licorice. Some kinds/brands are better than others, but I don't think I've come across a kind of black licorice that I didn't like. My favorites are simple... Good n' Plenty, Nibs, and Snaps (which come to think of it, actually is similar to a piece of leather covered in a soap-like coating). Nevertheless, that stuff is addicting... I swear it must be laced with some sort of drug that is off the charts. The trend these days is to make the "Australian" licorice... you see dozens of different brands in stores everywhere. That stuff isn't half-bad either, but give me a bag of one of the truly original black licorice brands, and I'm a happy camper. Filet Mignon - Medium Rare. I don't need a restaurant to cook it for me... just give me some sort of grill/oven combination, a couple of the thick cuts from Costco, and I'm good. Don't even need any seasoning, really. As far as I'm concerned, the bloodier the better, as long as it's warm in the center. I would usually sautee some mushrooms as well, but that might be breaking the "rule of 5." Others I considered: Ice cream - I'm an ice cream junkie, but don't really have a particular favorite flavor, so I left it off the list. If I could just say ice cream in general (as one of my five), I would probably have to find a way to include it, especially if we're not considering the nutritional value of our choices. Salad - No better way to start a meal than with a good house salad, IMO. Problem is that the really "good" ones are hard to find. I used to be a big fan of Outback's salads, but they seem to have gone downhill over the past couple of years. Their tangy tomato dressing is still one of my favorites, though. Still, I would have a hard time including a salad on my list of five, unless we were to consider nutrition. Chicken - On a broad scale, chicken in general. More specifically, you can do countless things with boneless/skinless chicken breasts. Once again, if nutrition was a factor, that might make my list. Of course, that would be assuming that I would have seasonings and such at my disposal. If not, just plain chicken would be quite bland, and get old in a hurry. Burgers - I'm as much of a fan of plain old burgers as the next guy. I also like several variations... bacon, blue cheese, etc. But, I can't think of a single type of burger that I would crave as much as anything else on my list, so I had to leave it off. Reeses PB Cups - Probably my favorite candy bar, but not even close to being as good as black licorice. Movie theatre popcorn - Definitely something I crave, especially if I'm within range to get a whiff of it. Probably on my top ten, but wouldn't put it above the others on my list, especially if that's all I would be able to eat. If I had to choose one beverage, it would probably be A&W Root Beer out of a keg (like they sell in the gallons at their stores). A not-so-close second would be Cherry Coke. Swiss Cheezhead
1. Cheeseburger -- Easy #1 choice for me. It's the one specific food I both crave and eat the most. All five food groups in one. 2. Porterhouse steak -- Two cuts in one, which makes it the no-brainer steak choice for this list. 3. Popcorn -- I think every list should have a snack item, and popcorn trumps all other finger foods. 4. BBQ babybacks -- My own recipe is just so good that I don't think I could live without it anymore. 5. Pizza -- Every once in a while, it's just time for pizza, and it's nonnegotiable. If I couldn't have pizza on one of those nights, I'd probably have a breakdown. Notes: -- I really struggled with french fries. One of the simplest, most delicious (and more nutritious than you think) foods ever. -- I totally agree with Gopher on Taco John's tacos. Infinitely better than Taco Bell, but Jack N The Box tacos are way up there, too. -- Chips & salsa (yes, one food) was difficult to leave off the list. I eat 'em all the time. -- I just had two Reese's "Dark" PB Cups, and my mind is blown. I didn't realize something like that could actually be improved. -- I can't believe I don't have any Asian food on the list, since I usually consider it my favorite overall cuisine. I guess I just couldn't choose one dish.

I guess I just couldn't choose one dish. Great minds think alike, and I agree with most of the above. Speaking of Asian food, another one that crossed my mind was PF Chang's... so many good dishes, though, that I left it off my top five (sort of like ice cream, in that I don't necessarily have a true "favorite.") If I could just put the entire restaurant on my list of five, though, it would be a no-brainer. They have a couple of entrees that are just mind-blowingly good... Mongolian Beef (I substitute asparagus for the scallions) and Dandan Noodles (sort of a spicy chicken/noodle/cucumber sprout dish that has the perfect combination of taste/texture) are two that come to mind. Several others I have tried that are very good, but I usually order one or the other nearly every time my wife and I visit (we usually end up ordering 2-3 items, sharing everything we order, and taking enough home for at least one round of leftovers for both of us).
